Wichita State Track and Field Wraps Up Competition at John McDonnell Invitational

4/25/2021 5:12:00 PM

WICHITA—The Wichita State track and field teams wrapped up competition at the John McDonnell Invitational on Sunday in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Steve Rainbolt said he could go all around and talk about strong performances from the Shockers.

"The way Antonio Norman ran the high hurdles was really a breakthrough performance," Rainbolt said. "Antonio was excellent indoors this year, but being taller, he is able to open up and go in the longer outdoor race. He's a wonderful hurdler.

Antonio Norman, who showed flashes of excellence in the hurdles indoors, ran two great 110-meter hurdle races. Norman broke 14 seconds twice and his best time of the day came in the finals of the event when he ran 13.81(w). Norman's time is tied for No. 27 in the NCAA this year and puts him at No. 4 on the SHockers' all-time performance list.

Norman also anchored the men's 4X100-relay team who ran one of the best times in the conference this year. The Shockers ran a time of 40.68, which ranks second in the conference behind Houston, who leads the NCAA in the event.

"Jed Helker added a terrific 800-meter run to his strong 1,500 meters from last night," Rainbolt said. "We had some good long jumping from Dowdy Elazarig and he triple jumped well last night. That was a strong meet from him. Joakim Genereux had a nice 100 meters and Nate Vann had a strong decathlon. Amanda Kakoulias and Anna Zimmer both had strong shot put performances."

Three Shockers had strong 800-meter races. Jed Helker led the Shockers, finishing in sixth with a time of 1:51.90, which puts him at No. 2 in the AAC this year. Zack Penrod had a season-best time, clocking in at 1:52.04, and Josh Cable set a personal best, running a time of 1:53.15.

Dowdy Elazarig led a trio of Shockers in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.31m/23-11.75(w). Elazarig, Yuben Goncalves and Ethan Toy all broke the 7-meter mark.

Cory Martens won the men's discus with a season-best throw of 53.79m/176-5.

Nate Vann just barely missed out on the 7,000-point mark in the decathlon. He ended the contest with 6,989 points and finished in sixth. Rainbolt called Vann's effort a good midseason competition.

On the women's side, the Shockers had an impressive shot put competition. Amanda Kakoulias finished second with a season-best throw of 14.59m/47-10.50. Anna Zimmer also set a personal best, throwing the shot 14.33m/47-0.25.

Paula Garcia and Jacque Darby finished in the top six of the women's 100 meters. Darby's time of 11.73 puts her at No. 8 on the Shockers' performance list in the event.

Sydney Wilson finished second in the women's high jump, clearing 1.65m/5-5.

Rainbolt said he thought the meet was a good sign for the future for Wichita State.

"The basic takeaway is how we feel as a team and that everything is coming together for the AAC meet in Tampa in three weeks," Rainbolt said. "I feel like a lot of Shocker athletes are getting ready beautifully."

The Shocker track and field teams return to action with a pair of meets next weekend. Most of the Shockers will head to Lawrence for the Rock Chalk Classic and select athletes will compete at the Trial of Miles Kansas City Qualifier.
