Michael Bryan Improves Hammer Throw School Record, Throws Top-10 NCAA Mark

EUGENE, Oregon—The Wichita State track and field teams helped open Hayward Field with the first day of the Hayward Premiere on Friday night.
 
Michael Bryan won the men's hammer throw. He threw the hammer 68.54m/224-10 to improve his own school record by nearly two meters. The win is the first victory at Hayward Field since it was renovated.
 
Bryan's mark in the hammer throw is No. 6 in the country this year. The mark is also ranked third in the West region and No. 2 in the American Athletic Conference.
 
Cory Martens also competed in the men's hammer throw, taking seventh place with a throw of 56.29m/184-8.
 
Ethan Kossover ran a personal best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:01.42. His time would slot at No. 12 in the country based on the national performance list heading into Friday night.
 
Taran Taylor took third in the javelin, throwing a season-best mark of 69.14m/226-10. 
 
Zack Penrod and Jed Helker wrapped up the night for the Shocker men in the first heat of the 1,500 meters. Penrod was just .68 second off his PR with a time of 3:43.64 and Helker improved his PR by .04 seconds with a time of 3:47.42.
 
On the women's side, Yazmine Wright ran a new personal best time in the 1,500 meters, clocking in at 4:25.97. Wright's time is No. 6 on the all-time performance list for the Shockers. She also leads the AAC in the women's 1,500 meters with her time.
 
Rebekah Topham and Nicole McMillen ran their first steeplechase race of the season. Topham nearly broke 10-minutes with a time of 10:04.38 and McMillen ran the No. 7 time in school history in 10:32.45.
 
Winny Koskei ran in an elite field in the 10,000 meters' invitational section. She finished 18th with a time of 34:12.23
 
The Shockers return to action Saturday for the second day of the Hayward Premiere.
