DELAND, Fla. – The Wichita State baseball team outscored Stetson 6-0 in the final three innings to erase an early five-run deficit and down the Hatters, 11-8, on a rainy Saturday, March 20, at Melching Field.

Wichita State (8-7) is scheduled to close out its four-game weekend in DeLand with a 10:30 a.m. CT (11:30 a.m. ET) contest against FIU Sunday, March 21.

Garrett Kocis continued his red-hot performance at the plate, going a blistering 4-for-5 with a double and triple and drove in two runs to lead the Shockers.
Ross Cadena added a trio of hits, including a double, while
Corrigan Bartlett batted in three runs, and freshman
Chuck Ingram belted his first collegiate home run.

Reliever
Ryan Stuempfig (3-0) earned the victory on the mound for WSU after giving up three runs – two earned – on two hits in 2 1/3 innings, and
Aaron Haase secured his fourth save of 2021 after throwing 1 2/3 hitless and scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Stetson (13-7) raced out to an early 5-0 lead with a run in the first and four in the second.

The Shockers began to chip away the deficit with a run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth, before knotting the game, 5-5, in the top of the sixth after Ingram hit the first pitch he saw over the right field fence for his inaugural round-tripper in the Yellow and Black.

Stetson regained an 8-5 edge with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Wichita State exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh to charge back and take a 10-8 advantage.

Back-to-back singles from
Jack Sigrist and
Couper Cornblum started the seventh-inning comeback, before Kocis smacked a one-out double to right field, plating Sigrist, and Bartlett followed with a two-run single through the left side, scoring Cornblum and Kocis, tying the game, 8-8.

David VanVooren moved Bartlett over to second via a single through the left side, before Cadena ripped a double down the left field line, bringing Bartlett around to score the go-ahead run and advancing VanVooren the third. VanVooren provided the final run of the frame, crossing home plate on a Stetson passed ball.

WSU added an insurance run in the ninth after Kocis led-off the inning by hitting a fly-ball to center that was lost in the lights by the Hatter outfield, allowing him to advance all the way to third for a bloop triple, before he scored on a single through the left side from Bartlett.

Haase slammed the door shut in the bottom of the ninth, retiring Stetson in order, sealing the Shocker victory.

Hernen Sardinas had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs, while Andrew MacNeil went 2-for-3 with two RBI, leading the Hatters.

Stetson reliever Gavin Sullivan (1-1) took the loss on the rubber after surrendering two runs – one earned – on three hits and failing to get an out in the seventh inning.
