WICHITA—The multi-event competitions kicked off the Herm Wilson Invitational on Thursday afternoon inside of the Heskett Center.
 
Four men in Shocker uniforms competed and one woman in a Shocker uniform competed on Thursday.
 
Nate Vann and Tanner Brown had similar day ones with just 13 points separating the two.
 
Vann leads the overall contest with 2,934 points. He finished in the top three of every individual event completed on the first day of heptathlon competition.
 
Vann's highlights included runner-up finishes in the 60 meters (6.99), long jump (6.63m/2-19) and high jump (1.89m/6-2.25). Vann has shown strength in the pole vault and will try to earn a lot of points in the event on Friday.
 
Brown finished in the top five of each event. He won the 60 meters with a time of 6.91. Brown also cleared 1.89m/6-2.25 in the high jump to finish in a tie for third in the event.
 
Chandler Stiawalt is sitting in fifth place in the overall standings. Stiawalt won the shot put with a mark of 12.81m/42-0.50.
 
Hudson Bailey made his multi-event debut in a Shocker uniform and sits at eighth after the first day of competition. Bailey finished in a tie for third in the high jump, clearing 1.89m/6-2.25.
 
On the women's side, Jalyn Whorton finished ninth in the overall pentathlon standings with 2,443 points. She won the shot put with a toss of 9.47m/31-1.

The Shocker track and field teams return tomorrow with the conclusion of the Herm Wilson Invitational.
