WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State track and field team opens their indoor campaign at home with the Shocker Multi women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon Wednesday and Thursday.
Â
"This meet is all about mastering the process," head coach
Steve Rainbolt said. "They'll be experiencing what you experience at an indoor championship where you compete in a pentathlon or heptathlon and then come back the next day and compete in another event (final day of Intrasquad on Friday)."
Â
The Shocker Multi will be the first of three indoor multi-event competitions and is the first opportunity for the newcomers to compete in a Shocker uniform.
Â
"
Brianna Utecht is a terrific freshman for us, so I'm excited to watch her go through her first indoor pentathlon in a Wichita State uniform," Rainbolt said.
Â
On the men's side, this will be the first heptathlon as Shockers for two junior college transfers,
Kolby Caster and
Jack Mull, and redshirt-freshmen
Adria Navajon Fabregat and
Hudson Bailey, while
Tanner Brown and
Nate Vann will be returners.  Vann earned all-conference honors in the outdoor decathlon in 2021.
Â
"
Tanner Brown and
Nate Vann are two guys that I really know are going to be good," Rainbolt said. "For all those [new] guys, this is an exciting time to get a chance to tee it up for their first go around in a multi-event competition setting."
Â
Maria Romero,
Destiny Masters,
Anna Heacock and
Kenisa Meyer are the returners that will be joining Utecht in the pentathlon.
Â
"
Destiny Masters has been doing some remarkable things in training, and I'm very hopeful that she'll have a really nice meet," Rainbolt said.Â
Â
Wen Clough will also be competing unattached in the heptathlon.
