WICHITA, Kan. – Shocker basketball welcomed fans back to Charles Koch Arena for the 2021-22 Shocker Madness Tuesday night.
Â
Fans were introduced to the 2021-22 men's and women's basketball teams, and the returners from the 2020-21 men's team were presented with their American Athletic Conference championship rings.
Â
The night began with a three-point contest, as
Asia Strong punched her ticket to the finals with a 13-10 victory over
Carla Bremaud in the first round.
Jalen Ricks and
Kenny Pohto then took the court for their faceoff, with Pohto edging out Ricks, 13-12, after Ricks missed his final bonus ball as the clock expired.
Â
Pohto met Strong in the finals for a three-point showdown. An early back-and-forth contest ended with Pohto claiming a 17-10 decision after hitting a bonus ball to open up his lead.
Â
Four Shocker men entered the slam dunk contest and didn't hold back. Monzy Jackson's baseline dunk off the backboard from Ricks earned a 33/40 but wasn't enough to push him through to the finals.
Dexter Dennis came out of the tunnel to throw down a crowd-favorite alley-oop from
Qua Grant to move easily into the finals with a score of 40/40.
Â
Ricky Council IV and
Isaac Abidde found themselves in a dunk-off after their first-round slams to try to earn a spot in the finals. Council IV went between the legs for the second time to earn nines across the board, but the judges were more impressed with Abidde's 360 throwdown, pushing Abidde through to the finals by one point. After a final-round tie, Abidde walked away with the title after defeating Dennis in his second dunk-off of the night.
Â
