WICHITA, Kan. - Kenyon Giles,
Dre Kindell and
Will Berg combined for 56 points to power Wichita State past Wofford Wednesday night in Charles Koch Arena, 84-73.
Wichita State (7-5) never trailed, controlling the game for nearly the full 40 minutes behind efficient shooting and a decisive 40-14 advantage in bench scoring.Â
Giles paced Wichita State with a game-high 22 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, while adding timely baskets whenever Wofford threatened to close the gap. Kindell went for a new career-high 19 points on 5-of-6 shooting and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Berg returned to the lineup after missing the game vs. DePaul with a sprained ankle and tied a career high with 15 points on 9-of-10 free throw attempts. Six of his seven rebounds came on the offensive end.
Wichita State finished the night shooting 49.1 percent from the field (26-of-53) and 35.0 percent from three-point range, while knocking down 25-of-36 at the free throw line. Wofford shot 40.7 percent overall and 28.0 percent from deep.
The Shockers came out aggressive on both ends, opening the game with back-to-back baskets from Giles and
Karon Boyd to set the tone. After Wofford briefly answered with a Nils Machowski three, Wichita State responded with an extended run fueled by offensive rebounding and transition opportunities.
Midway through the half, Kindell sparked the Shockers off the bench with a fast-break layup and free throw, helping Wichita State stretch the lead to double digits. Giles followed with a pair of pull-up jumpers and a second-chance three that pushed the margin to as many as 12.
Despite Wofford finding success on the offensive glass late in the half, Wichita State closed strong. Kindell buried a three-point play in the final two minutes, and
Michael Gray Jr. capped the half with a driving layup off a turnover in the final seconds, sending the Shockers into the locker room with a 41-29 advantage.
Wofford opened the second half with renewed energy, trimming the deficit to six following a fast-break layup and free throws by Kahmare Holmes and Cayden Vasko. Each time the Terriers gained momentum, Wichita State responded.
Berg controlled the paint with a series of hook shots and free throws, while Giles knocked down a key three at the 14:58 mark to reestablish a double-digit lead.Â
The Terriers made one final push midway through the half, cutting the lead to four at 57-53, but Wichita State answered with an alley-oop finish by
Jaret Valencia and back-to-back free throws from Berg. A Boyd three-pointer at the 6:11 mark extended the lead to seven, and Gray Jr. followed with a timely triple to push the margin back to nine.
Down the stretch, the Shockers calmly closed the game at the line. Giles and Kindell combined to go 8-for-8 from the stripe in the final three minutes as Wichita State maintained control and sealed the 84-73 victory.
