Trio of Victories Highlight Conclusion of Jayhawk Classic

1/23/2021 3:44:00 PM

LAWRENCE—The Wichita State track and field teams concluded the weekend with the second day of action at the Jayhawk Classic inside of the Anschutz Pavilion on Saturday.

"The late January indoor track meets are often full of challenges for many athletes," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Steve Rainbolt. "Today was no different with a variety of aches and pains and ups and downs but we did have some good performances. I'm confident we will round into good form as the season goes along."

Adam Gauzy led a pack of Shockers in the 200 meters, winning the event with a time of 22.08. Antonio Norman came in third place with a time of 22.41.

Joseph Holthusen won another 60-meter hurdles race in the first two weeks of 2021. He ran a time of 8.01 to win the event. It is his second consecutive win in the event after winning the Triangular last week.

Yuben Goncalves nearly jumped seven meters in the men's long jump. His mark of 6.96m/22-10 earned him a runner-up finish in the event.

Davis Dubbert cleared 2.00m/6-6.75 in the men's high jump to come in second place. The jump set a personal-best mark for Dubbert in the high jump.

On the women's side, Jacque Darby took home an individual title in the long jump. She won the event with a jump of 5.71m/18-8.75.

Darby also earned a third-place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 25.43. Fellow Shocker Paula Garcia was the runner-up in the women's 200 meters, running a season-debut time of 24.95.

Sydney Wilson earned a pair of runner-up finishes Saturday. She came in second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.21 and was the runner-up in the high jump, clearing 1.65m/5-5.

Amanda Kakoulias threw a season-best mark in the women's shot put. Her toss of 14.89m/48-10.25 was good enough for a third-place finish in the event.

Shocker track and field returns to action Friday to host the Shocker Invitational.
