Lutfiana Budiharto is part of the 2020 Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame induction class. The class will be inducted on Sat., Jan. 25.
Wichita State women's tennis handled the transition to current coach
Colin Foster from Chris Young smoothly, judging from the results in the record book.
Â
The change, however, didn't come without a few concerns for Foster after he took over a senior-dominated team in 2009-10.
Â
After that season, sophomore Lutfiana Budiharto, the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, wasn't sure how things might go without all those seniors. Foster answered her questions and her career as a Shocker carried on.
Â
"The team was going to be brand-new her junior year," Foster said. "She bought in to what we were going to do. I showed her the players we had recruited and signed and we were able to bring in some strong players to reload."
Â
Foster now regards her as a foundational piece of the program and her induction into the Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame a fitting recognition. Budiharto, from Jakarta, Indonesia, now lives in Tokyo and works as a financial controller. She earned a master's degree (International Finance and Accounting) at the University of East London in 2015.
Â
"She worked hard, listened and then would go out and do it," Foster said. "For any team, it's rare to have a player where you know that No. 1 singles is filled and we're going to have a chance to win, no matter who you go up against. That's a nice luxury."
Â
Budiharto's presence made that reloading a lot easier. Young won three conference titles in five seasons and Foster kept the program rolling with eight straight Missouri Valley Conference championships and nine NCAA Tournament bids.
Â
Budiharto earned MVC Freshman of the Year honors in 2009 and won MVC Player of the Year honors the next three seasons. She is the only Shocker to qualify for multiple singles berths in NCAA play (2010, 2012). She remembers a win over No. 72 Missouri in 2012 as one of the most important team victories during her time. A win over a ranked opponent from Nebraska helped her earn the NCAA spot in 2012.
Â
"Playing a team sport definitely helps . . . learn important lesson such as cooperation, cheering each other at all times," she said in an email. "You work with everyone as a team - we came to all matches as one Shocker family."
Â
Budiharto went 110-27 in singles to rank second on Wichita State's career list. She won 89 doubles matches to rank eighth. She helped the Shockers win four MVC titles (and play in four NCAA Championships) while winning all 31 of her career MVC dual matches and 48 of 49 sets.
Â
She also earned MVC Scholar-Athlete honors three times.
Â
"She was, in tennis and academically, disciplined and it was every day at practice, every workout," Foster said. "She did not take a day off. When she stepped inside the court, she was locked in."
Â
Budiharto used that work ethic to overcome her small size.
Â
"She's very strong and could really, for someone her size, could generate a lot of power," Foster said. "She had incredible timing and she just had no holes. She didn't have a huge serve, but she could locate it well, so it wasn't a weakness."
