SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The San Jose State University Spartans defeated the Wichita State volleyball team, 3-1, in the opening match of the Cal Poly ShareSLO Mustang Challenge Thursday, Sept. 5, inside the Mott Athletics Center. The set scores were 25-16, 25-18, 14-25 and 25-19.
Wichita State (2-2) is scheduled to continue play in the ShareSLO Mustang Challenge against host Cal Poly (0-3) Friday, Sept. 6, at 9 p.m. CT (7 p.m. PT).
Playing in her home state, sophomore outside hitter and Leona Valley, Calif., native
Megan Taflinger led the Shockers, tallying 11 kills and a pair of service aces. Junior setter
McKayla Wuensch added a match-high 26 assists and three aces, while redshirt freshman middle blocker
Chinelo Ogogor had a team-best four block assists in the first match of her collegiate career.
The Shockers had a 6-4 advantage in blocks and 5-3 edge in aces for the match, but hit just .117 with 37 kills on 137 attempts and 21 errors, while the Spartans (2-2) hit .266 with 54 kills on 139 attempts and 17 miscues.
Haylee Nelson hit .452 with a match-best 16 kills on 31 attempts and two errors, pacing San Jose State.
