Shockers Set to Compete in Wyoming Cowboy Classic

CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Wichita State men's golf team continues its spring season with the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on Monday and Tuesday.

This will be the fourth consecutive year that the Shockers compete in the event, finishing 15th as a team last season. The Shockers are coming off a 16th place finish at the Furman Intercollegiate, with Yannik Emmert recording his fifth top 20 finish of the season.

Head coach Grier Jones is shaking up the lineup, inserting two new players that did not compete in the last tournament. Freshman Grayson Wallace will compete in his second career tournament, collecting a 239 54-hole score at the 34th Annual Louisiana Classics. Sophomore Nicolas Absil gets the nod to compete in his first collegiate tournament.

In addition to Emmert, Zac Owens and Brock Polhill make a return to the lineup card. Owens is coming off a 2-under par performance in the third round of the Furman Intercollegiate, moving him into a tie for 30th place. Polhill will be making his seventh tournament appearance this season as a true freshman, collecting two rounds scoring 74 to finish in a tie for 76th.

Wichita State is 1-7 against the tournament field this season, finishing ahead of Cal State Fullerton and losing to Wyoming, Grand Canyon, Northern Colorado and UT-Rio Grande Valley. Other teams competing include Boise State, Cal State Northridge, Gonzaga, Old Dominion, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, Stephen F. Austin, UC Davis, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UT Arlington, Utah State, Utah Valley and Weber State.

Out of the 20 teams participating on Monday and Tuesday, the Shockers will face the most ranked teams in one tournament this season with four. UCLA (No. 39), Boise State (No. 63), Cal State Fullerton (No. 77) and Santa Clara (No. 78) are all ranked in the Golfstat top 100.

UCLA is coming off a team victory at the Seattle University Redhawk Invitational, compiling a 54-hole score of 815 (-37) last week. Boise State claimed the Bill Cullum Invitational earlier in the fall and are coming off a third place finish at the Duck Invitational, hosted by the University of Oregon.

UTSA won the event in 2018, compiling a 54-hole score of 842 (-22), with Sean Meehan of UTSA claiming individual honors with a 205 (-11). McNeese State holds the record for best tournament team score at Whirlwind Golf Course, shooting 838 (-26) in 2015 to claim the team title.

Whirlwind Golf Club is a par 72, 7,218-yard course. Live stats will be available on Golfstat. Tee-off will begin at 8:30 a.m. CST with a shotgun start on Monday, with 36 holes scheduled to take place.
