Distance Teams Set to Compete at Drake Relays

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State track and Field will send nearly a dozen Shockers to compete at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
Wichita State will see its first action beginning with the distance carnival Thursday, April 25. Multiple Shockers will be in action on Friday, while concluding the meet with two relays on Saturday.
 
A live stream will be produced by USATF.TV, beginning Thursday at 5:30, a monthly subscription is required. Live results will be posted on the official @GoShockersTFXC twitter account and goshockers.com.
 
ROLE CALL
Nearly a dozen Shockers will see the track at the 110th Drake Relays. Zack Penrod and Ben Flowers highlight the men's group, both men have recorded Shocker season leading times in at least two events. Nathan Wickoren, Jed Helker, Reno Law and Ethan Kossover will all be in action for the men's team. Shocker women taking the track include, Winny Koskei, Halle Johnson, Rita Schnacker, Rebekah Topham and Yazmine Wright.
 
TOP OF THE CONFERENCE
The Shockers have five conference leading marks, including three distance times. Zack Penrod recorded a conference leading 1500m time of 3:44.72 at the John McDonnell Invitational on April 12, while Winny Koskei leads The American in the 5000m (16:23.65) and Rebekah Topham is top of the conference in 3000m steeplechase (10:09.94).
 
SHOCKERS IN THE WEST
If the NCAA West Regional were to happen today Wichita State would see three distance runners in four events on the track in Sacramento. Rebekah Topham leads the group with the highest west regional ranking of No. 8 in the 3000m steeplechase (10:09.94), followed by Winny Koskei No. 21 in the 10,000m (33:50.68) and No. 41 in 5000m (16:23.65). Zack Penrod is the lone Shocker from the men's distance group that ranks in the top-48, he sits No. 29 in the 1500m (3:44.72).
 
DRAKE RELAYS FLASHBACK
Wichita State found much success in 2018 at the Drake Relays, including Winny Koskei recorded the sixth fastest time in Shocker history placing third overall in the women's 5000m seeded race with a time of 16:30.16. The men's distance team recorded five top-10 finishes, including a fourth place individual finish by Zack Penrod in the 1500m with a time of 3:49.93. Rebekah Topham competed unattached finishing second in the 3000m steeplechase in 10:15.75.
 
NEXT UP
The rest of the Wichita State track and field teams will travel to Lubbock, Texas, to compete in the Red Raider Shootout on Friday, April 26. The Shockers will conclude the regular season hosting the Shocker Open on Friday, May 3.
