JUCO Forward Wade Completes Spring Recruiting

4/19/2019 12:32:00 PM

Wichita State filled its 13th men's basketball scholarship on Thursday with a commitment and National Letter of Intent from junior college transfer Trey Wade.

Wade – a 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward, originally from Marietta, Ga. – has two seasons of eligibility remaining. He played his sophomore season at South Plains (Texas) College and helped the Texans to a No. 2 national ranking and a semifinal appearance at last month's NJCAA National Tournament. He started his collegiate career at UTEP, averaging 7.8 points and 4.7 rebounds as a freshman.

Wade's addition gives the Shockers an influx of experience at the forward position after the departure of all-conference senior Markis McDuffie.

"Having watched Trey all year long, we feel like he is as good as we can get at replacing the productivity of a Markis McDuffie," head coach Gregg Marshall said. "No one can walk in the door and be McDuffie – we don't expect Trey to do that – but he's got the mind, the athleticism, the strength and the skills to come in and impact our program as a forward and hopefully take us to another level."

Wade was an all-conference and all-region performer for South Plains this year and ranks among the top-25 junior college recruits in the Class of 2019, per jucorecruiting.com. He averaged 13.4 points and 6.9 rebounds in just over 23 minutes-per-game.

"We're very excited about the quality of person that he is. He's got a wonderful family," Marshall said. "He's played for Steve Green at South Plains, who is one of the top junior college coaches in America, as well as Tim Floyd at UTEP. So he's been coached. He understands hard work, and we feel he is a wonderful fit."

Wade becomes the fifth member of WSU's 2019 recruiting class, along with Sunrise Christian Academy guard Grant Sherfield and fall signees Tyson Etienne (6-1 | G | Englewood, N.J./ Putnam Science Academy), Noah Fernandes (6-0 | G | Mattapoisett, Mass./ Woodstock Academy) and DeAntoni Gordon (6-8 | F | Mobile, Ala./ Leflore Preparatory Academy).
