Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – Three Shockers scored in double figures to help the Wichita State men's basketball team roll to a 72-55 victory over the ECU Pirates Tuesday, March 5, in the final home game of the regular season at Charles Koch Arena.
Playing in his final regular season home contest, senior
Markis McDuffie netted a team-high 16 points on 4-of-11 shooting, leading the Shockers (16-13, 9-8 American), while fellow senior
Samajae Haynes-Jones finished with seven points and dished out a team-best four assists in his regular season home finale.
Sophomore
Asbjørn Midtgaard added a career-high 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and freshman
Dexter Dennis posted 10 points and snagged a team-high eight rebounds.
WSU shot just 39 percent from the floor and 24 percent from three-point range in the game, but held ECU (10-19, 3-14 American) to only 36 percent shooting overall and 20 percent from beyond-the-arc. Wichita State also outrebounded East Carolina, 47-37, and tallied a 30-22 edge in points in the paint.
The Shockers started ice cold from the field, making just one of seven attempts in the opening five minutes, and trailed 6-4 until Dennis and McDuffie drilled back-to-back three-pointers, putting Wichita State in front for the first time in the game, 10-6, with just over 14 minutes to go in the first-half.
WSU didn't let up from there, and utilized an 8-0 run to increase its lead to 18-9 after a one-handed slam from Dennis off an assist from
Erik Stevenson with 10:14 remaining in the opening stanza.
The Pirates cut the lead to 18-14 when Shawn Williams connected on a jumper and made a three at the 9:11 mark of the half, but a 14-4 offensive surge over the next five minutes ballooned the Shocker advantage to 32-18 with just under four minutes to go. Wichita State went into halftime leading, 34-22.
McDuffie (eight points) and Haynes-Jones (seven points) paced WSU through the opening 20 minutes.
The Shockers shot just 33 percent from the floor in the first-half, but limited ECU to just 28 percent. WSU also posted an 11-2 scoring advantage at the free-throw line, and outrebounded East Carolina, 26-21.
Wichita State didn't let-up in the second-half, and built its lead to 17 after Midtgaard converted a jumper with 14:39 remaining in the frame.
The Pirates were able to trim the deficit to 11 with 9:40 to go in regulation, but that was as close as the visitors could get the remainder of the game.
The Shockers built their advantage to as much as 19 twice in the final three minutes, before McDuffie and Haynes-Jones exited the game to a standing ovation with just under two minutes remaining.
Isaac Fleming netted a game-high 17 points to pace the Pirates.
Wichita State is scheduled to close out the regular season with a game at Tulane on Saturday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m.
