Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Wichita State's run in the 2019 Air Force Reserve American Athletic Conference Championship came to an end with a 66-63 loss to No. 2 seed Cincinnati.
The Shockers battled back from 13 down in the second half to tie it at 63, but the Bearcats used a layup and a free throw in the last 30 seconds to earn the win.
Markis McDuffie finished with 18 points, while
Samajae Haynes-Jones added 17.
With the loss, the Shockers fall to 19-14 overall and had their six-game winning streak snapped.
The first half featured five lead changes along with a few scoring droughts.
Five early points from McDuffie and a hook shot from Midtgaard gave WSU an early 7-6 lead. A Burton three in the corner pushed it to 10-6. During the 9-0 Shocker run, WSU held the Bearcats scoreless for almost three minutes.
UC answered with a 9-0 run to go in front 15-12. During that stretch, the Shockers didn't score for more than four minutes.
Two McDuffie free throws stopped the run and cut the lead to 15-14 and three more free throws from McDuffie pulled WSU within 20-17.
UC held WSU without a field goal for eight minutes before a Torres three ended the drought and made the score 24-20 Bearcats.
A desperation three-pointer at the end of the shot clock by Haynes-Jones with five minutes left in the half cut the lead to 26-24 and Haynes-Jones added two free throws to tie it at 26.
The Shockers held UC scoreless for almost five minutes as WSU took a 32-29 lead off two Echenique free throws with 30 seconds left in the half.
WSU made just eight field goals in the first half, but hit 13 of 14 free throws.
Two quick baskets gave UC the 33-32 lead to start the second half before a Dennis free throw tied it at 33.
Two Bearcat three's and another Shocker scoring drought put UC up 39-33 with just under 16 minutes left in the game.
A Burton three ended the drought, but a 13-3 run pushed the Bearcat lead to 46-36 with 12:30 to go.
After the Bearcats took their largest lead at 53-40, the Shockers answered with three-pointers from McDuffie and Dennis to cut it to 53-46 with a little over eight minutes left.
Two Echenique free throws, a Stevenson three and a Haynes-Jones layup tied it at 62 with three minutes left in the game.
Cumberland's free throw put UC up 63-62 and Echenique's free throw tied it at 63 with under a minute left.
Broome's layup gave the Bearcats a 65-63 lead and after the Shockers missed a shot, UC made one free throw with 2.7 seconds remaining for the 66-63 win.
