BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Wichita State men finished day one of the American Athletic Conference Championships with the lead, while the women sit in second.

The Shocker men scored 40 points behind all-conference performances from
Rayvon Allen,
Jared Belardo,
Hayden Bugner and
Cory Martens. While the women scored 31.5 points, including two conference event titles.
Â
Winny Koskei continues her American Athletic Conference reign, the redshirt sophomore won the 5000m with a time of 16:23.64. The women scored another 10 points as the distance medley relay group of
Yazmine Wright,
Trudy Martin,
Tianna Holmes and
Rebekah Topham made a historic comeback to take the gold with a time of 11:32.19. The group recorded the third fastest DMR time in Shocker history.

Claudia Rojo scored six points finishing third with all-conference honors in the pentathlon with a personal best score of 3,749. Rojo recorded three top-5 finishes, including third in the long jump (5.60m/18-4.5), third in the 800m (2:22.29) and fifth in the 60m hurdles (8.91).

Two other Shockers scored points in the pentathlon including,
Sydney Wilson and
Kendra Henry. Wilson finished sixth (3,586 points) scoring three points, while Henry tied for seventh (3,517 points) scoring 1.5 points.
Alesa Frey scored one point finishing eighth in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.84m/12-7.25.

Allen and Belardo led the men's team scoring scoring 14 points in the long jump. Allen led the way finishing second with a mark of 7.57m/24-10, followed by Belardo in third with a leap of 7.48m/24-6.5.

Martens and Bugner placed second in their respective events, Martens in the weight throw (19.97m/65-6.25) and Bugner in the pole vault (5.03m/16-6).

Other Shockers scoring points on the men's side include, the distance medley relay team finishing fifth,
Isaiah Evans and
Kaden Griffin placing sixth in their respective events. Evans recorded a mark of 18.88m/61-11.5 in the weight throw and Griffin recorded a mark of 7.21m/23-8 in the long jump.

Ben Johnson finished day one of the heptathlon with 3,171 points. The redshirt senior won the shot put (14.35m/47-1) and finished second in the 60m (7.13), long jump (6.94m/22-9.25) and high jump (1.98m/6-6).

Wichita State advanced seven athletes to the finals in their respective events. The men's mile group advanced four runners including
Zack Penrod,
Jed Helker,
Reno Law and
Nathan Wickoren. Helker recorded the fastest mile time in the prelims clocking in at 4:14.22.

Penrod ran the fastest 800m in the prelims advancing to the finals tomorrow at 1:10 p.m. Penrod clocked in a personal best time of 1:50.50, the fifth fastest time in Shocker history.

Three women advanced to tomorrow's finals including,
Tianna Holmes,
Rebekah Topham and
Halle Johnson.
Â
Holmes ran the third fastest 400m in Shocker history with a time of 55.40. Topham automatically qualified winning the first heat with a time of 4:58.08, while Johnson qualified with a personal best time of 4:58.94.

Day two continues with the start of the heptathlon at 9:00 a.m., followed by open field events at 9:45 a.m. Running events begin start at 11:20 a.m.
