Shockers Win 15 Individual Events to Sweep Prelude

WICHITA, Kan. –  Wichita State won a combined 15 events to sweep the Shocker Prelude, Saturday afternoon, Jan. 19, inside the Heskett Center.
 
The Wichita State men's team won with a total of 180.5 points, while the women took the title with 179 points. Seven men combined to win a total of eight events, including a Cory Martens sweep in the throws. The women's team won seven individual events, including an Alex Adams Shocker all-time top-10 performance in the weight throw.

The Shockers finished two in the top-3 in a combined 13 events, including 1-2-3-4-5 finishes in both the men's and women's mile races.
 
MEN'S RECAP
Wichita State defeated second place Friends University by 84.25 points. The group recorded eight event titles, six second places and four third place finishes.
 
Cory Martens led the group with two individual titles, winning the weight throw (19.40m/63-7.75) and shot put (16.31m/53-6.25). Joseph Holthusen ran 8.29 in the 60m hurdles, the fastest time in the prelims. Holthusen carried that momentum into the finals winning the event with a time of 8.10.
 
Martens and Holthusen are the only Shockers to of won their respective events Friday night at the KU-KSU-WSU Triangular and Saturday at the Shocker Prelude.
 
Other event winners include, Slayde Little winning the pole vault with a personal best 4.86m/15-11.25, Pedro Montoya (3000m | 8:45.74), Reno Law (800m | 1:57.67), Ethan Kossover (mile | 4:21.19) and Davis Dubbert (high jump | 1.93m/6-4).
 
WOMEN'S RECAP
Alex Adams started things off early for the women's team winning the weight throw with a personal best 18.55m/60-10.5, bettering her No. 3 all-time mark. Teammate Kelsey Slawson took first place in the shot put with a mark of 15.09m/49-6.25 to secure a Shocker sweep in the throws.
 
Success continued in the field events as Jalen Milligan won the long jump (5.39m/17-8.25) and Shania VanNoster took first in the high jump clearing 1.62m/5-3.75.
 
The Shockers domination continued to the track as Maria Romero started things off with a 9.01 60m hurdles time, the fastest in the prelims. Romero did not let off the gas as she won the finals race with a time of 9.04.
 
True freshman Halle Johnson ran a personal best 5:17.42 mile to claim victory, while Kendra Henry won the 800m race in 2:27.40.
 
NEXT UP
The Wichita State track and field program split sending the majority of the team to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete in the Air Force Invitational on Thurs. Jan. 24-26, while the majority of the distance team will travel to Pittsburg, Kan., to compete at the Pitt State Invitational on Jan. 26.
