Shockers Set 13 WSU All-Time Top-10 Records

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Wichita State men's and women's track and field teams recorded 13 all-time top-10 school records Saturday at the Hawkeye Invitational.
 
Wichita State traveled with nearly 90 athletes to compete in the Hawkeye Invitational. The Shockers came away bettering or equaling 25 personal records and setting 13 all-time top-10 marks.
 
IN THE FIELD
The Shockers started the field events off hot Friday night recording three top-5 finishes including, Isaiah Evans finishing second in the weight throw (18.81m/61-8.5), followed by Cory Martens in third (18.74m/61-5.75). Alex Adams placed fifth in the women's weight throw with a personal best 17.58m/57-8.25. Martens and Adams each left Iowa City with Shocker all-time top-10 marks, Adams No. 3 and Martens No.
 
Wichita State continued to dominate the field events, setting four more all-time top-10 marks. True freshman Sidney Sapp won the women's high jump in a jump-off, equaling the fourth best clearance in school history at 1.76m/5-9.25. Fellow freshman Amiya Anoma placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 12.38m/40-7.5, No. 7 on the all-time list. Redshirt sophomore Amanda Kakoulias landed herself No. 10 on the all-time shot put list with a mark of 13.91m/45-7.75.
 
The pole vault crew landed two women in the top-5, including third place finisher Alesa Frey (3.95m/12-11.5) and fifth place finisher Emily Gardiner (3.65m/11-11.75).
 
Kelsey Slawson finished third in the shot put with a mark of 14.89m/48-10.25, while Hannah Cole jumped 5.57m/18-3.25 to place third in the long jump.
 
On the men's side Rayvon Allen led the way winning long jump with a mark of 7.55m/24-9.25, No. 7 all-time. Belardo followed in second place (7.40m/24-3.5) and Kaden Griffin in fifth (7.25m/23-9.5).
 
Mason Buckmaster led the men in the high jump equaling his personal best of 2.05m/6-8.75, while Hayden Bugner cleared 5.00m/16-4.75 to place second in pole vault. Bryce Bearden set a personal best clearing 4.85m/15-11 to place fourth.
 
ON THE TRACK
The women highlighted the day with top-4 finishers in the 200m, including Paula Garcia's No. 10 Shocker all-time 24.93 to win the race. Freshman Taniyah McMillian followed in second (24.99), Jacque Darby in third (24.99) and Sidney Sapp in fourth (25.72).
 
True Freshman Destini Eskridge won the 3000m (unseeded) with a personal best time of 10:42.0, followed by Katie Cumpston in seventh with a personal best 11:10.7.
 
Shockers Daysha Bullocks and Trudy Martin each recorded 600m all-time top-10 records. Bullocks placed third in 1:35.28, No. 3 all-time, and Martin finished in 15th place with a time of 1:39.61, No. 9 all-time.
 
Yazmine Wright was the lone Shocker to place in the top-5 of the 800m, she finished second overall with a personal best time of 2:13.68. Her time ranks No. 9 all-time.
 
Rebekah Topham won the women's mile with a time of 4:53.06, followed by Winny Koskei in fifth place with a personal best time of 4:57.37.
 
Competing in the finals of their respective events, Claudia Rojo placed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.89 and Raianna Maples finished sixth in the 60m with a time of 7.97.
 
On the men's side of the track, Adam Gauzy and Zack Penrod each recorded top-10 marks in their respective event. Penrod placed second in the 1000m with a time of 2:25.08, No. 3 all-time passing Tomas Cotter (2012). Gauzy finished 8th in the 600m with a time of 1:23.55, No. 7 all-time.
 
Alex Moen ran a personal best 8:46.9 to place fifth overall in the 3000m (unseeded) race, while Austin Corley placed fourth in the 400m with a time of 48.25.
 
Wichita State finished four in top-5 of the 800m race, including true freshman Jed Helker winning the race with a time of 1:55.13. Cory Landon followed in third (1:57.36), Jason Landon in fourth (1:58.38) and Jack Lowry in fifth (1:59.57).
 
Nathan Wickoren ran a personal best 4:09.41 to finish second in the mile.
 
After qualifying in the prelims, Denvoir Griffin and Joseph Holthusen each competed in the finals of their respective events. Griffin placed third in the 60m (6.84) and Holthusen finished seventh in the 60m hurdles (8.32).
 
NEXT UP
The Shockers will next travel with 26 men and 26 women to Lawrence, Kan., on Fri. Jan. 18, to compete in the KU/KSU/WSU Triangular. On Sat. Jan. 19, Wichita State will host the Shocker Prelude.
