Shocks Ready for USATF Junior Championships

WICHITA, Kan. –
Four Wichita State student-athletes qualified for the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships on June 15-17 in Bloomington, Ind.
 
Hayes Track at the Haugh Complex will be the site of the 2018 USATF Junior Outdoor Championships, hosted by Indiana University on June 15-17.
 
Rayvon Allen, Grant Downes, Taran Taylor and Ben Flowers each qualified in their respected events, in order to qualify athletes had to of met specific qualifying marks and be under the age of 20.
 
Taran Taylor enters the meet ranked No. 1 in the javelin with a personal best throw of 74.26m/243-7, his mark is No. 6 on the all-time US Junior list. He will compete Friday, June 15 at 6:30 p.m. CT. During his freshman campaign as a Shocker, Taylor finished runner-up at The American Athletic Conference Championship behind teammate Aaron True. The Arkansas City, Kan., native placed 28th at the NCAA West Preliminary Round with a throw of 61.82m/202-10. His personal best 74.26m/243-7 is No. 2 on the WSU all-time list.
 
Rayvon Allen enters the meet ranked No. 2 in the long jump with a personal best 7.71m/25-3.5. He will compete Friday, June 15 at 5 p.m. CT. During his freshman season as a Shocker, Allen earned all-conference honors finishing third at The American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships with a mark of 7.47m/24-6.25. The St. Louis, Mo., native recorded two top-5 finishes at The American Athletic Outdoor Championships placing fourth in the long jump (7.71m/25-3.5) and fifth in the triple jump (15.05m/49-4.5).  Allen has a total of five marks on the WSU all-time lists, he ranks No. 2 as part of the outdoor 4x100m relay (40.28), No. 4 indoor triple jump (15.37m/50-5.25), No. 8 outdoor triple jump (7.71m/25-3.5), No. 8 outdoor long jump (7.71m/25-3.5) and No. 9 indoor long jump (7.47m/24-6.25).
 
Multi-athlete, Grant Downes will compete in the decathlon that begins Friday, June 15 and ends with day two on Saturday, June 16. He enters the meet ranked No. 9. During the 2018 indoor season, Downes completed three heptathlons, setting a personal best 4,753 at the Air Force Indoor Team Challenge on January, 19. In the 2018 outdoor season, the Kansas City, Mo., native completed three decathlons bettering his score each meet. He finished the outdoor season with a personal best decathlon score of 6,348 finishing ninth at The American Athletic Conference Championships.
 
Distance runner Ben Flowers will compete in the 5000m race on Friday, June 15 at 7:40 p.m. CT. Flowers competed in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field as a freshman Shocker. During the indoor season he recorded two second place finishes running 4:16.58 in the mile at the 3rd Annual Indoor Gorilla Classic and 8:38.80 in the 3000m at the Herm Wilson Invitational. In the 2018 outdoor season the Jerseyville, Ill., native ran a personal best 15:10.66 in the 5000m to place third at the K.T. Woodman Classic. He ran part of three different relays that each finished in the top-10 at the 2018 Drake Relays, including a fourth place finish in the 4x1600m (17:22.33), seventh in the 4x800m (7:58.21) and ninth in the distance medley relay (10:05.39).
 
 
Athletes that finish in the top-2 of their event advance to the World Junior Championships in Tampere, Finland on July 19-24.
