WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State student-athletes
Fatima Bizhukova and
Sandra Honigova were named to the American Athletic Conference all-conference team Thursday.
The head coaches in the American Athletic Conference voted for the all-conference team.
Bizhukova, who ranks No. 72 in today's ITA/Oracle National Singles Rankings, was one of four tabbed a unanimous selection. The sophomore has been ranked in every poll this season, and ranked as high as No. 55 (April 3). She compiled an 18-12 overall record, while going 11-7 in dual action. She is 4-4 versus ranked opponents, most noticeably a straight-set victory over No. 3 Andrea Lazaro of FIU in January.
The native of Balashiha, Russia was named American Conference Player of the Week two times on the season. (Jan. 28, March 11).
Bizhukova most recently earned a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship (May 23-28), after receiving the automatic bid from the American Athletic Conference. With the nod, Bizhukova becomes just the fifth Shocker to make the NCAA Singles Championship.
Honigova too was named American Conference Player of the Week twice, (Feb. 4, Feb. 26). A junior transfer from FIU, Honigova collected 15 wins on the season for the Shockers. She primarily competed in the second flight, where she knocked off two top-70 opponents. A native of Czech Republic, Honigova ranks No. 124 in today's ITA/Oracle Rankings, and peaked as high as 102 earlier this season.
The honors mark the first for Wichita State in its first season in the American Athletic Conference.
