WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State senior Giulia Guidetti is the winner of the Central Region's 2018 Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced today.
 
The Cissie Leary Award is given annually to a Division I women's tennis player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. The award dates back to 1997 and is in memory of the late and widely admired Penn women's tennis coach Cissie Leary.
 
"Giulia always represents herself with the utmost professionalism. In practice and competition she works and fights hard, but always with fairness and respect for her opponents, teammates, officials, coaches, etc.", head coach Colin Foster said.
 
Guidetti will go down as one of the greats to put on a Shocker uniform. The senior carved her name in the record books in numerous categories. She holds the record for wins in a single season (39-5) and wins in a two-year span (63-18). Her 96 career singles wins rank sixth all-time and her .787 career winning percentage ranks third. She ranks first in singles wins in the NCAA Tournament with three and is 4-3 overall.
 
"She set a great example in her time here, starting as a freshman struggling to break into the lineup and then becoming a player who would set records and win a Conference Player of the Year," said Foster.
 
A native of Casinalbo, Italy, Guidetti was named the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and collected all-conference honors four times in her tenure. In 2016, she was an All-MVC selection at both No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles, and No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles in 2017.  She was named MVC Player of the Week five times in her career.
 
A business administration major, Guidetti landed on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll six times and was named to the Dean's List four times to go along with a cumulative 3.64 GPA.
 
Outside the classroom, Guidetti and her teammates have taken an active role in the community through the Pando Initiative. Members of the Shockers team meet regularly with struggling students from Cloud Elementary and serve as mentors.

"She handled the ups and downs of sport with a positive attitude and was a joy to coach and be around," Foster said.
