FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Wichita State softball team fell 5-0 in game two of the NCAA Regionals to No. 13 and regional hosts Arkansas.
The Shockers will now face the winner of Oklahoma State - DePaul at 6:30 p.m. tonight with the winner advancing to a Sunday matchup against the Razorbacks.
Bailey Lange started in the circle, getting the first three Razorbacks in order but the Shocker bats followed suit in the bottom half of the inning.
The defense retired the Hogs in order again in the second and the third with
Asea Webber drawing a walk in the second for the Shockers' first base runner of the game.
In the third
Mackenzie Wright battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a two-out walk to get on base. She then stole second, No. 53 of her career, with Lange drawing another walk to get two on but the bats left them stranded.
Arkansas got the first hit of the game in the fourth, a bouncing infield single, with the runner just beating out the throw from third base but Lange and the defense sat down the next two to end the top of the inning.
In the bottom half Webber singled down the left field line for the Shockers' first hit of the day, advancing to second on a fielding error, but again the bats left her there.
The Arkansas bats then came alive in the fifth with a solo home run to left field quickly followed by a deep triple into right.
Laurie Derrico threw down the runner at home plate in the next at-bat but a walk and fielding error quickly loaded them again. Two straight ground outs to second base scored another for Arkansas with the last finally getting out of the inning.
The Hogs threatened again in the sixth but a diving catch into the wall by Webber left two stranded. In the seventh they would tack on three more runs on three hits with the Shockers going through two pitching changes to get out of the half inning before going down in order to end the game.
Lange took the loss (19-13) with the Shockers (31-22) set to face the winner of Oklahoma State – DePaul tonight at 6:30 p.m., live on ESPN3.
