Henry Wins Heptathlon Title

CINCINNATI –
Kendra Henry won the women's heptathlon on day 2 of The American Athletic Conference Championships at Gettler Stadium.
 
Redshirt freshman Kendra Henry set a personal best winning the heptathlon with 5,018 points, her mark is No. 10 on the Shocker all-time performance list.
 
The Waverly, Kan., native started day two of the heptathlon in fourth place and after five events she dropped to sixth place. Henry's turning point came during the sixth event, the javelin, in which she not only set a personal best throw but she recorded the sixth best javelin throw in Shocker history winning the event with a mark of 46.31m/153-7.
 
Entering the last event, the 800m, she was in fourth place with 5,285 points and only 125 points behind the leader. She finished the race in second with a time of 2:26.83 and won the heptathlon by 38 points ahead of sophomore Natosha Jordan of UCF.
 
Henry wasn't the only multi-athlete earning all-conference honors, on the men's side Ben Johnson and Jake Horsch took a spot on the medal stand. Johnson finished the decathlon in second place with 7,272 points and Horsch took third with 7,080 points, each setting personal best. Johnson's score of 7,272 ranks him No. 7 on the all-time top-10 list in Shocker history.
 
Not to be out-done by the multi-athletes, junior All-American Jared Belardo earned all-conference honors finishing second in the long jump with a mark of 7.85m/25-9.25. His mark is an outdoor personal best and ranks No. 4 on the Shocker all-time list.
 
On his first attempt Belardo set a meet record with a mark of 7.83m/25-8.25, Belardo remained the leader until the final round of jumps when Jared Kerr of Houston bettered the meet record with a jump of 8.14m/26-8.5. Belardo recorded his best jump on his last attempt, finishing second with a 7.85m mark.
 
Indoor mile champion, Zack Penrod ran the fastest preliminary time in the 1500m (3:56.02), followed by Stan Skwarlo, III with the second fastest time (3:56.04) and personal best. Ben Flowers ran 3:57.17 to finish seventh in the second heat, all three men advanced to the 1500m finals on Sunday at 3:50 p.m. CT.
 
All-American Hunter Veith ran 14.65 and Colin Reichenberger ran a personal best 14.76 in the 110m hurdles, each qualified for the finals on Sunday at 4:10 p.m. CT.
 
After six scored events the men are in first with 46 points and after seven scored events the women are in seventh with 20 points.
 

Championship Sunday Preview
 
Day three of The American Athletic Conference Championships begins with the men's javelin at 9:00 a.m. CT, followed by the women's javelin at 11:00 a.m. CT. Aaron True leads the No. 1 javelin group in the country with the nation's sixth best throw of 72.05m/236-5. The women's javelin group is ranked No. 15 in the country, Carlea Miles leads the group of throwers with a Shocker season best throw of 47.68m/156-5.
 
Hayden Bugner, Katie Murray and Kelsey Slawson each enter tomorrow ranked No. 5 in their respected event and look to battle up for points.
 
True freshman enters the triple jump tomorrow with a conference leading mark of 15.64m/51-3.75, followed by Belardo with the second best mark in the conference (15.62m/51-3).
 
The Shocks will be well represented in the finals for multiple running events, including the 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 800m, 1500m and 5000m, along with multiple team relays.
 
Field Events start at 9:00 a.m. CT, and running events are set to start at 3:30 p.m. CT.
