Lange Leads Shockers Past Bears

WICHITA, Kan. –  Bailey Lange's 200th career strikeout helped the Wichita State softball team to a 3-1 victory over Missouri State on day one of the Wichita State Tournament at Wilkins Stadium. Madison Perrigan's home run led the offense with Mackenzie Wright going 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles.

Lange went 12-up and 12-down for a perfect first four innings, giving up her first hit in the fifth. Overall she had nine strikeouts to match her season high for the third time.

In the first, the Shockers left two on base. Wright singled into left field and advanced to second on a passed ball. A strong throw from the Bears catcher caught her too far off the bag with Laurie Derrico singling into right field. A pop out got the Bears out of the inning.

In the bottom of the second Caitlin Bingham led off for the Shockers with a hit by a pitch. Perrigan, who was 7-for-15 at the plate entering the game through her last five games, crushed the ball over the right-center fence for her second home run in two games to give Wichita State an early 2-0 lead.

In the third, Lange's second and third strikeouts kept the Bears off the board; the third was a huge swinging effort to give her 200 for her career.

Both teams went scoreless through the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the bottom of the sixth the Shockers added an insurance run with a fielder's choice getting Wright home on a Paige Luellen hit.

The Shockers were on cruise control until the Bears' bats came alive in the top of the seventh. Two singles and an error loaded the bases with another single getting a Missouri State runner home to cut the score to 3-1. But Lange (7-4) would come up huge with three straight strikeouts getting out the jam to give the Shockers the win and move them to 11-8 on the year.

Wichita State will face Western Illinois at 5:00 p.m. in the second game of the day.
