Shockers Win 4-1 over Razorbacks

Results

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.
- Wichita State won four-straight singles matches to knock off Arkansas 4-1, Saturday at the Billingsley Tennis Center.

The victory marks just the second time in school history the Shockers have knocked off Arkansas (2-21), and the first since the 2014-15 season when the Shockers took down No. 54 Arkansas 4-3 in Fayetteville under current head coach Colin Foster.

FROM HEAD COACH COLIN FOSTER
"Arkansas has yet to lose a doubles point this year so I'm not surprised by the result there, although I felt like we came out just a bit sluggish at 1 and 2 (spots). I know they will be ready to correct that tomorrow. In singles, we made it a priority to play as solid as we can from start to finish. We really did well to limit any negative momentum swings and push and extend our positive momentum opportunities and that paid off on every court. Tomorrow will be another great test on a schedule that's filled with a bunch of them. We're excited for another challenge."

DOUBLES

Arkansas jumped on the board first, taking care of the doubles point against the Shockers. Giulia Pairone and Mia Jurasic dropped the tandem of Marta Bellucco and Sandra Honigova (6-1) in flight two, followed by Tatum Rice and Ana Oparenovic taking down Fatima Bizhukova and Gabriela Porubin in the top flight (6-2) to clinch the doubles point. Giulia Guidetti and Ting-Ya Hsu, who are 2-0 on the season in the third flight, led Natsuho Arakawa and Jackie Carr (5-3) before going unfinished.

SINGLES

Guidetti put the Shockers on the board and extended her record to 5-2 on the season, taking down Tatum Rice in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) in the third flight.

Coming off an American Conference Player of the Week nod, Honigova gave the Shockers a 2-1 lead in flight two. The junior who ranks No. 104 in the latest ITA/Oracle Singles Rankings, dropped No. 67 Oparenovic in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to move her record to 6-0 on the season.

Saidhujaeva clinched the third straight point for the Shockers in the sixth flight. After taking the first set (6-1) over Jackie Carr, Carr rallied from a 5-2 deficit to take a 6-5 lead. Saidhujaeva rallied back, winning in a tiebreaker (7-6(7)).

Porubin clinched the match for the Shockers in the fourth flight. The senior, who is now 4-1 in dual action, took on Mia Jurasic in a three-set match. Porubin ran away with the first set (6-3).
