Fans Get First Glimpse of 2018-19 Shockers at Open Scrimmage

10/6/2018 4:31:00 PM

Fans got their first look at the 2018-19 Wichita State men's and women's baketball teams and witnessed some late-game heroics Saturday afternoon at the inaugural Black & Yellow Scrimmage.

In the men's portion, Jamarius Burton's driving, twisting jumper with just seconds on the clock gave Black a 26-25 intersquad victory over Yellow. Lozada-Cabbage hit a jumper of her own to cap a 10-minute women's session and salvage a 13-13 tie.

The two programs have a combined total of 21 newcomers. Three others are coming off of redshirt years.

Lozada-Cabbage -- one of just two seniors on the women's team -- led the Black squad with seven points, while junior Maya Brewer paced the Yellow squad with seven points of her own.

On the men's side, sophomore transfer Teddy Allen -- who played last year at West Virginia -- finished with a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds to lead Black to victory. Freshman Dexter Dennis tacked on eight points on 3-of-6 shooting.

Chance Moore scored 11 of his game-high 13 points in the second period to help Yellow overcome a 12-5 deficit at the midway point. He was 5-of-7 overall from the field, including 3-of-5 from deep. Senior point guard Samajae Haynes-Jones finished with eight points and three assists for Yellow.

Yellow made just 2-of-13 first-half attempts from the field but went 7-of-10 in the final 10-minute period. Freshman forward Rod Brown's free throw points gave Yellow a 25-24 lead with less than 20 seconds to go.

Burton had attempted just one shot to that point but was ready in clutch. He probed the defense, drove left and hoisted an off-balance jumper that cleared the outstretched arm of 6-foot-8 Morris Udeze and fell through the net with just two seconds showing on the clock.

The Wichita State women open the season on Nov. 1 in an exhibition contest vs. Missouri Southern State at 6:30 p.m. in Charles Koch Arena, and the men host Catawba in a tune-up on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
