Black Completes Fall World Series Sweep of Yellow

10/21/2018 5:11:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan. – The Black Team tallied five extra-base hits on its way to a 5-4 victory over the Yellow Team in the 2018 Wichita State Baseball Fall World Series finale on Sunday, Oct. 21, at Eck Stadium.

With the victory, the Black Team completed a three-game series sweep of the Yellow Team after winning game one, 2-0, and game two, 6-4.

Sophomore Paxton Wallace went 3-for-4 with a double while freshman David VanVooren hit a two-run home run, and fellow freshman Carson Cox added a triple, leading the Black Team.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Cal Carver (1-0) earned the victory on the mound after giving up three runs – none earned – on two hits with eight strikeouts and four walks in five innings. Fellow freshman southpaw Reece Koon secured the save after surrendering one earned run on one hit with a strikeout in the top of the ninth inning.

After the Yellow Team gained an early 2-0 lead on a Black Team error in the top of the second inning, Jack Sigrist was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the third before VanVooren stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run shot into the bleachers in left field, tying the game.

Mason Miller provided the go-ahead for Black in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double to right center that scored Cox.

Yellow responded though, and tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the fifth when Luke Ritter crossed home plate on a Black Team error.

The tie was short-lived, however, as Wallace was able to score on a Yellow miscue in the bottom-half of the inning, putting Black back in front, 4-3.

Black built its advantage to 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth when Noah Croft singled, then advanced to second on an error, before scoring on Cox's two-out triple to right center.

Yellow attempted a ninth-inning rally after Garrett Kocis hit a one-out solo homer to dead centerfield, but Koon was able to get a strikeout and ground out, preserving the triumph for Black.

Sophomore Ross Cadena went 2-for-4 in the batter's box to pace the Yellow Team.

Sophomore Liam Eddy (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in five innings.
