Shocker Duo Compete for Team USA in Canada

Results: Women's Heptathlon | Women's Para Ambulatory 100 | Women's Para Ambulatory 200

OTTAWA, Canada – A pair of Shockers represented the United States earlier this week at the Canadian Track & Field Championships.

Outgoing WSU senior Breanne Borman took eighth in the women's heptathlon, and junior Deja Young earned 100 and 200-meter golds while competing in the women's para ambulatory division.

It was the first taste of international competition for Borman -- a second-team All-American in the heptathlon at last month's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She tallied 5,195 points over the two days to finish eighth out of 17 entrants.

It was business as usual for Young – a gold medalist in both the 100 and 200-meters for Team USA at last summer's Paralympics in Rio. Her winning time of 25.61 in Tuesday's 200-meter final gapped the field by nearly two full seconds. Wednesday's 100-meter victory came in similar fashion, with a 12.50 besting the rest by over eight-tenths.

A junior from Mesquite, Texas, Young was part of a Shocker 4x100 meter relay that claimed second team outdoor All-American status in 2015. She redshirted the 2017 season but is now ramping up for the Paralympic World Championships later this month in London.

"Over the years, athletes from our program have represented their home countries and Shocker track and field very well in international competition," WSU Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, Steve Rainbolt said. "We're excited to see that tradition continue. Breanne and Deja have both been a big part of our program, and we're proud of their accomplishments."

Rainbolt Headed to Germany

Rainbolt will make his own contribution to WSU's Team USA legacy, later this month, as an assistant coach on USA Track & Field's Thorpe Cup team.

The Thorpe Cup is an annual decathlon and heptathlon competition between the U.S. and Germany. Rainbolt served as head coach in 2016 and led the American decathletes to a decisive victory.

The 2017 event takes place July 29 and 30 in Dusseldorf, Germany.
