Qualifying Underway at Wichita Tennis Open

WICHITA, Kan. --  Coaches Danny Bryan and Colin Foster, plus five members of the Wichita State men's tennis team will compete in the 2017 Wichita Tennis Open, beginning Saturday.

The $25,000 professional men's tournament runs from July 1-9 at WSU's Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. Admission is free.

Foster and Bryan will join Eddie Stoica, Austin Williams and Andrea Caligiana in qualifying action, starting Saturday morning. Participants in the qualifying draw must win three matches in three days in order to reach the main draw.

Two other Shockers -- rising sophomore Murkel Dellien and junior Marius Frosa -- have already locked up guaranteed spots in the main draw as wildcards. They'll open play on July 4.

3:00 pm -- Danny Bryan (WSU men's tennis coach) vs. Daniel Langston

Bryan -- who recently completed his first season as WSU's head men's tennis coach -- is a former LSU standout who still ranks among Tigers' all-time wins leaders, amassing nearly 200 singles and doubles victories from 2003-07. He climbed as high as No. 3 in the national doubles rankings and No. 32 on the singles chart on his way to All-American status. Following his senior year, he played a summer on the ATP Tour.

Foster has led the Shocker women's program for the past eight years. He enjoyed a highly successful playing career at Purdue from 2002-06. Foster spent the majority of his senior year competing in the No. 1 position and finished his career as the team's Most Valuable Player.

Williams -- a Wichita native -- is a three-year member of the WSU men's team.

Stoica -- from New Zealand -- finished up his sophomore season with a 22-16 singles record. He was an all-conference selection in 2016.

Caligiana joined the Shocker team last January. He's a native of Perugia, Italy.
