CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Wichita State shot 29 percent from the field and committed 18 turnovers to fall, 62-35, at UNI Thursday night in the McLeod Center.
The Shockers were led in scoring by
Rangie Bessard's 13 points and
Angiee Tompkins' nine points. UNI was led by Madison Weekly and Kennedy Kirkpatrick, who had 14 points each.
UNI shot 39.6 percent (21-53) from the field for the game to the Shockers' 29.2 percent (14-48), and out-boarded WSU, 42-26. WSU missed all 10 three-point attempts.
UNI won all four quarters, 12-9, 14-6, 18-9 and 18-13.
The Panthers took an 11-point halftime lead and increased it to 15 by the 7:50 mark of the third quarter, 34-19. After a 3:45 minute scoring drought by both teams, UNI got two free throws to take a 36-19 lead at 4:09. UNI then out-scored WSU 8-5 over the final four minutes for a 20-point lead, 44-24, to end the third quarter.
In the fourth, UNI extended its lead to 27, 51-24, before WSU got its first basket of the half by Bessard at 5:36. Later, UNI got its largest lead, 32 at the 2:11 mark.
To open the game, UNI got three baskets inside from Megan Maahs to take a 6-2 lead by the media timeout at 4:51. WSU then out-scored the Panthers, 7-6 over the remainder of the quarter, but UNI held a 12-9 lead after one frame. WSU shot just 23 percent (3-13) while UNI shot 33 percent (4-12). Each team had for turnovers in the first quarter.
In the second, scoring was hampered by 18 total turnovers, including 11 by WSU, as UNI took an 18-11 lead at the 5:00 mark. Over the next four minutes UNI built a 13-point lead by the 1:07 mark, and held the Shockers to just six second-quarter points to take a 26-15 lead at the half.
For the half, 12 Shocker turnovers and one assist on five baskets contributed to the 11-point deficit. WSU shot just 22 percent (5-22) for the half while UNI shot 36 percent (9-25). The Panthers also held a 20-14 margin on the boards.
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage led WSU with six points while Kirkpatrick led UNI with eight points. Eight of UNI's points came at the line.
Wichita State closes the regular season 2 p.m., Saturday at Drake.
