WSU Falls in Shootout at No. 22 Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa -  Wichita State fell in a high-scoring affair at No. 22 Drake Saturday afternoon, 105-89, inside the Knapp Center.

WSU was led in scoring by Rangie Bessard's 24 points. Angiee Tompkins backed her with 17, TaQuandra Mike had 16 and Keke Thompson had 14.

Drake had three players with 20-plus points led by Lizzy Wendell's 25 points.

Drake shot 55.4 percent from the field for the game (36-65) while WSU shot 46.8 percent (36-77).

In the third quarter, DU went up by nine before WSU went on a 12-0 run and took the lead at 7:03 on a lay-in by Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage, 54-53. The two teams traded the lead four times with DU up,  62-58, at 4:53 after a Becca Hittner free throw. Later, DU extended the lead to nine after a 9-2 run at 3:04, 71-62. An ensuing 5-0 run gave the Bulldogs a 76-64 lead with 1:46 left in the quarter.

Drake held an 83-64 lead heading into the fourth. WSU out-scored Drake, 25-22, but wasn't enough as Drake came away with the 105-89 win.

Wichita State jumped out to a seven-point lead by the 4:12 mark of the first quarter on a Mike jumper to put WSU up 21-14. The fast pace saw two ties and a total of 55 points in the first frame with WSU up, 28-27, after one quarter.

In the second, Drake got its first lead since the 6:50 of the first quarter on a layup up by Caitlin Ingle at 9:08, to lead, 29-28. Them teams traded baskets over the next four minutes until a Bessard layup gave WSU the lead back at 5:17, 34-33. After trading baskets again Drake went on a 7-0 run to take a 46-40 lead at 2:03 of the second, and with 10 seconds remaining went up by seven, 51-44, on a layup by Brenni Rose to close out scoring in the half. DU won the second quarter, 24-16, as the scoring pace slowed.

For the half, both teams shot better than 50 percent with DU at 55.9 percent (19-34) and the Shockers at 51.2 percent (21-41). Two Shockers scored in double-figures with Bessard's 16 points and Tompkins' 11. Drake was led by Wendell's 15 points.

WSU fell to 14-15 overall and 9-9 in the MVC while Drake improved to 25-4 overall and a perfect 18-0 in the league. The Shockers are next in action 2:30 p.m., Friday, against Southern Illinois in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at the iWireless Arena in Moline, Ill.
