WICHITA, Kan. -- Tanaporn Thongsing picked up her team-leading 17th singles victory, but Kansas ended Wichita State's 34-match home winning streak with a 5-2 victory, Friday afternoon at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
Â
WSU (4-2) lost in Wichita for the first time since a 6-1 setback to No. 20 Purdue on Feb. 25, 2013.
Â
Kansas (5-2) claimed its first victory over the Shockers since 2002.
Â
"I'm really proud of the fight," head coach,
Colin Foster said. "Kansas is a very strong team and came in here looking for revenge after we won a close one at their place last year."
Â
The visiting Jayhawks took the doubles point and won first-sets in five of the six singles matches.
Â
In a court-one battle of nationally ranked players, Anastasia Rychagova (ITA No. 50) defeated WSU's
Giulia Guidetti (ITA No. 113), 6-3, 6-1.
Â
Thongsing claimed her own sweep on court No. 4 over Nina Khmelnitckaia, 6-3, 6-4, to pull the Shockers to within 2-1 on the scoreboard. Thongsing improved to 17-5 and upped her dual record to 3-1.
Â
Kansas moved within a point of victory with Tatiana Nikolaeva's 6-3, 6-2 win over Ting-Ya HSU on court No. 6.
Â
"We kind of wilted a bit at the end of the doubles and talked about fighting hard through adversity in singles," Foster noted. "I was interested to see how we'd respond after dropping five first set and we really dug in and made a match out of it."
Â
WSU kept its hopes alive when three other Shockers clawed back to force third sets, but only
Fatima Bizhukova was able to pull out a win. She took care off Janet Koch, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 on court No. 3.
Â
"In the end Kansas was just too good," Foster said. "But matches like this are important for a young team to see what it takes to be in the upper echelon of college tennis. Fatya and Tana both played great and continue to build on their strong starts to the season."
Â
The Shockers return to action Monday in Fayetteville, Ark. With matches against Cornell (9 a.m.) and host Arkansas (1 p.m.).
