STARTING FIVE:

1 --- MATCHUP:
WSU and Newman have met four times previously (twice in exhibitions and twice during the regular season). While 2011 and 2014 games counted toward WSU's regular season record and statistics, all four were considered exhibitions for Newman… The Shockers are a combined 4-0 in those games, topping 100+ points in each of the last two meetings… WSU has four senior holdovers (Morris, Kelly, Brown and Nurger) from the 2014 game. None of the current Jets saw action.

2 --- FINE TUNING: WSU blitzed Division II Henderson State, 90-53, in Saturday's exhibition opener. The Shockers made their first nine shots for a 17-3 lead after just four minutes. Up 31 at halftime, they held the visiting Reddies without a field goal for over 13 minutes to start the second half. Shaquille Morris (16 points), Darral Willis Jr. (14), Samajae Haynes-Jones (11), Conner Frankamp (10) and Rashard Kelly (10) led the scoring.

3 --- LOVE IT & LIST IT: With their top eight scorers back from last year's 31-win team that reached the NCAA second round, the Shockers are ranked seventh in the preseason Associated Press Poll (released Wednesday) and eighth in the USA Today Coaches Poll -- the program's highest starting point on either list since the 1981-82 season.

4 --- PERFECT AT PRACTICE: The Shockers have won 23-consecutive exhibition games, dating back 16 years. On Nov. 1, 2001, Athletes First escaped then-Levitt Arena with a 93-88 victory... Gregg Marshall is 12-0 in November exhibitions as Shocker head coach. Friday (Nov. 3) marked the 10th anniversary of his debut -- a 76-73 exhibition win over Arkansas Tech.

5 --- FULL SET OF VETS: WSU is one of five D-I teams that return over 90 percent of their scoring (91.2%) and rebounding (91.2%). Bradley (96.8/95.8), Colgate (93.0, 93.5), USC (97.9/96.6) and Cornell (100/100) are the others.

SCOUTING NEWMAN:
*Newman (9-19 last year) begins a new era after 19 seasons under Mark Potter. First year head coach R.J. Allen was promoted over the off-season after six years as an assistant on Potter's staff.
*The Jets transitioned from NAIA to Division II in 2008 and reached the postseason for the first time in 2013.
*Newman is picked eighth out of nine teams in the Heartland Conference preseason poll.

PAIR OF ACES HIGH:
He was an all-state performer who led Wichita East High School to a state title as a senior, then helped Hutchinson Community College to a 30-win season as a sophomore. That statement could apply to either WSU point guard Samajae Haynes-Jones (East class of 2015) or Newman head coach R.J. Allen (class of 2002). Both won championships at East before continuing their careers as Blue Dragons. Allen finished up a Division II Concordia in St. Paul, Minnesota.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS WITH NEWMAN:

*** Nov. 23, 2014 – WSU 105, Newman 57
Three stats from that game still stand as Marshall Era bests: rebound margin (+30), total rebounds (57) and points in a half (67)… The Shockers were 10-of-17 from three in the first half (but 0-for-6 over the final 20 minutes)… WSU closed the first half on an 18-2 run for a 34-point lead at the intermission… The Shockers outscored the Jets 48-12 in the paint… Ron Baker (18 points, 4-of-6 from three), Darius Carter (15) and Fred VanVleet (12) led the scoring.
Shaquille Morris made his first career start and tallied six points, five rebounds and three assists with four fouls in 11 minutes… Zach Brown (nine points, six rebounds in 15 minutes), Rauno Nurger (seven points, four rebounds, two blocks) and Rashard Kelly (four points, six rebounds, three assists in 16 minutes) also performed well… Reggie Baker (14) and Contrael Colbert (12) topped Newman's scoring chart.

*** Dec. 19, 2011 – WSU 102, Newman 53
The Shockers shot 62.9 percent from the field… WSU starters were even better, hitting a combined 70.6 percent: Ben Smith (6/7), Garrett Stutz (6/7), Joe Ragland (5/7), Carl Hall (5/8) and Toure' Murry (2/5)… Smith and Stutz scored 16-points each. Ragland collected six assists… Eric Saunders (14 points) led the Jets… The Shockers outscored Newman 52-16 in the paint…. Nine Shockers combined for 15 steals, and WSU forced 20 Newman turnovers.

*** Nov. 10, 2010 – WSU 80, Newman 62 (exhibition)
Four Shockers reached double-figures, paced by junior Garrett Stutz (4-of-4, 14 points, 7 rebounds). Toure' Murry, Joe Ragland and J.T. Durley tallied 10 points each… Ehimen Orukpe snagged 11 rebounds… Bobby Wesley (11 points) and former Shocker Mason Felter (team-high six rebounds) paced Newman.

*** Nov. 7, 2009 – WSU, 81, Newman 69 (exhibition)
WSU never trailed in a 12-point win… A pair of sophomores led the way: Toure' Murry scored a team-high 16 points, and Garrett Stutz added 12 points and seven boards… Junior Graham Hatch tacked on 13 points, five rebounds and three assists… Chip Steven led the Jets with 15 points including a 3-for-6 line from behind the arc.  Keaton Schultz and Jaray Mathews each had 12 points for NU… Up 11 at halftime, WSU hit 8 of its first 12 shots to start the second half for a 58-41 lead.

UP NEXT:
The Shockers open the regular season Friday night against UMKC (18-17, CBI Quarterfinalist last year). The 7 p.m. CT tip will air on YurView Kansas (Cox HD 2022) and beyond the Kansas borders on ESPN3.
