Shockers Wrap up Fall Slate at SMU

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Wichita State women's tennis team wraps up the fall slate with a trip to Dallas, Texas, to take part in the SMU Red and Blue Challenge at the SMU Tennis Complex starting Friday.
 
Six student-athletes will make the trip for WSU. Senior Gabriela Porubin, sophomores Fatima Bizhukova, Ting-Ya Hsu, and Marta Bellucco as well as newcomer Sarvi Saidhujaeva and freshman Alexandra Lazarova.
 
The tournament will be a round robin format, and will include both singles and doubles play. American opponents SMU and Tulsa will be in attendance, as well as Wyoming and Central Arkansas.
 
The Shockers will get a glimpse of not only going up against new American conference opponents, they will also get the opportunity to play at the SMU Tennis Complex, the host for The American Championships later in the spring.
 
Bizhukova comes into the tournament ranked No. 102 for the Shockers. Liza Buss is the lone Mustang ranked for SMU, at No. 77, while Ksenia Laskulova of Tulsa ranks No. 72, according to the ITA preseason rankings. In doubles, the Shocker duo of Bizhukova and Porubin rank No. 16, while Wyoming's Elisa Koonik and Tessa van der Ploeg rank tied for 48.
 
Bizhukova, from Russia, has had a solid fall season for the Shockers. She has five victories, including a win over No. 92 Zoe Douglas of Iowa. Freshman Alexandra Lazarova has also started her career as a Shocker off well, compiling a combined six wins in both singles and doubles. The duo of Porubin and Bizhukova have collected five wins, with a victory over No. 32 Ismail and Oliveira of Mizzou.
 
Bellucco has collected four wins, while Hsu has three on the season. Newcomer Saidhujaeva collected her first win as a Shocker at the ITA Central Regional in Lawrence two weekends ago, and has a combined four victories in singles and doubles.  
 
The round robin format tournament will kick off Friday with singles and doubles action, and all matches will be played on the campus of SMU, at the SMU Tennis Complex.
