Vimuktananda Rallies Back to Lift Shockers Over Kansas, 4-3

WICHITA, Kan. — Vichitraporn Vimuktananda rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the third set to win her match and lift Wichita State to a 4-3 victory over Kansas on Sunday afternoon at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.

The Shockers (7-3) earned their fifth straight win and notched their first victory over Kansas (3-2) since a 4-3 win on March 20, 2021.

"What a match and great college tennis atmosphere today at our courts," head coach Jacob Eddins said. "These girls are taking advantage of every opportunity that's come our way."

In doubles, No. 12-ranked Xin Tong Wang and Giorgia Roselli opened competition with a dominant 6-2 win over No. 58-ranked Kyoka Kubo and Heike Janse van Vuuren at No. 1. The Jayhawks answered with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 over Kristina Kudryavtseva and Theodora Chantava, sending the doubles point to No. 3.

At No. 3, Vimuktananda and Anne Knuettel rallied from a 4-3 deficit, winning the final three games to claim a 6-4 victory and clinch the doubles point.

In singles play, Kansas responded by taking four of six first sets. The Jayhawks earned a quick point at No. 6, as Knuettel fell 6-1, 6-0 in less than an hour to even the match at 1-1.

Kansas struck again shortly thereafter, as Wang dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 1 to give the Jayhawks a 2-1 lead.

No. 109-ranked Roselli answered for Wichita State, posting a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win at No. 2 to tie the match at 2-2.

With the remaining three matches going to third sets, Kansas regained the lead by defeating Kudryavtseva 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 4, moving within one point of the team victory.

Moments later, Chantava held off a comeback attempt to secure a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win, leaving Vimuktananda as the final match on the court.

After falling behind 3-0 in the third set, the senior won five straight games and held match point at 5-3, but her Jayhawk opponent rallied to tie the set at 5-5. Vimuktananda responded by holding serve to go up 6-5 and converted her second match point in the following game to secure a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 victory, and the 4-3 team win for the Shockers.

"This team just continues to impress," Eddins said. "We will enjoy this win for a couple of days."
