LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Wichita State women's tennis team completed play at the Kansas Invite in Lawrence Sunday inside the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
Over the weekend, the Shockers compiled six combined victories, all in singles play. "It was a productive weekend getting three of our youngest players lots of experience against good competition, "said head coach
Colin Foster. "In singles, I thought all three competed well."
Freshman
Alexandra Lazarova led the way for WSU,going 3-0. Lazarova earned her first victory Friday over Mary Katherine Lewis of Auburn, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. On Saturday, she faced Angela Li of Washington and won, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Lazarova went on to defeat Carla Pons Martorell of Kansas 2-6, 7-5, 1-0(8) to finish perfect on the weekend. "Alexandra saved match points in two of her wins and showed immense fight as well as improvement in her play and handling of those pressure situations," said Foster.
Additionally, newcomer Sarvi Saidhujaeva collected two wins on the weekend for the Shockers. Saidhujaeva defeated Caroline Turner of Auburn 7-5, 6-4 and Lana Slavica of Washington 6-4, 6-3. Auburn and Washington are both ranked in the ITA rankings. " Sarvi picked up two good wins against players from top 40 programs," said Foster.
Sophomore
Ting-Ya Hsu earned a singles victory of Gabriela Tenorio of Texas Tech, 6-0, 6-3 for the Shockers.
In doubles, half of the matches seen the Shockers teamed up with players from other teams, gaining experience along the way. Â On Friday, Policare and Martorell of KU def Lazarova and Tenorio of Texas Tech, 6-3. Hsu and Saidhujaeva faced another Kansas duo in Janet Koch and Maria Toran Ribes, losing 6-4. Lazarova teamed up with Hsu on Saturday, losing to Eva Alexandrova and Millie Stretton of Maryland, 6-2. "In doubles, we learned some lessons the hard way and that's good and expected for young players," said Foster.
WSU wraps up the fall slate this weekend when they travel to Dallas, Texas to take part in the SMU Red and Blue Challenge at the SMU Tennis Complex. The Shockers will get the opportunity to prepare for the spring season at the final fall tournament of the year. "Next weekend will be a great chance to compete as a team in a round robin format that mimics dual match play," said Foster. "We'll also get to compete against AAC teams at the venue for the conference championship, so it will be beneficial in that regard as well."
