Shockers Win at Evansville, 74-67

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  --  The Wichita State women's basketball team made 9-of-12 free throws in the final 1:20 to take a 74-67 win over Evansville  on Sunday afternoon inside the Ford Center.

WSU (6-10, 1-3) was led in scoring by  Angiee Tompkins' 16 points, while Rangie Bessard had 13 points, including three free throws down the stretch.

Evansville's (7-9, 2-3) Camary Williams led the Aces with a game-high 24 points.

All 10 Shockers that played scored in the game. WSU's ball movement in a five-woman platoon rotation contributed to 15 assists on 21 baskets.

Evansville took its first lead in the third quarter, 43-42, at the 5:05 mark on a trey by Dickey that capped an 11-2 run by the Aces. UE continued the run, out-scoring WSU 19-4 in the quarter to take a 52-44 lead headed into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, WSU took the lead 54-53, for good with a 10-1 run capped by a traditional three-point play by Tompkins at 5:08. Lee added a trey at 3:59 to give WSU a 57-54 lead.

WSU out-scored UE, 17-13, over the final 5:08 for the win.

Wichita State won the first quarter, 15-13, with five scorers contributing to 42.9 percent shooting (6-14). Thompson and Tompkins had four each to lead WSU.

The Shockers pushed the lead to six to open the second quarter, 21-15 at 8:36, with six-straight points from Lockhart, which included two free throws and two buckets. Bessard's layup gave WSU a 23-15 lead and forced an Evansville time-out.

The Shockers extended the lead to 10 twice in the second quarter, at the 2:59 and 1:28 marks, before heading into halftime up, 40-33.

All 10 Shockers scored in the first half, led by nine points from Tompkins. Good ball movement contributed to 11 assists on 13 baskets. Also for the half, WSU out-shot UE, 43.3 percent (13-30) to 37 percent (10-27).

Wichita State is next in action 7 p.m., Friday when Bradley comes to Wichita. The Shockers then face Illinois State at 2 p.m. on Sunday, also at Charles Koch Arena.
