Porubin Ousted at NCAA Singles Championship

5/25/2016 4:41:00 PM

TULSA, Okla. – Wichita State sophomore Gabriela Porubin fell 7-5, 6-3 to Pepperdine's Luisa Stefani, Wednesday afternoon in first round action at the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Singles Championships at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Porubin (No. 91 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Rankings) led 5-4 and was a point away from closing out a first-set victory, but Stefani (ITA Rookie of the Year and No. 6 nationally) bounced back to win a crucial point at 40-all.

Stefani (37-5 singles record) reeled off two more games to take the opening set and extended the run by taking a 3-0 lead in the second. Porubin (26-11) continued clawing and had opportunities to even the set at 4-4 but couldn't convert.

"Both players struggled a bit early with the wind and nerves," WSU head coach, Colin Foster said. "It was a great experience and great year for [Porubin]. She has a lot to be proud of and a lot to look forward to."
