WICHITA, Kan. – The 29th-ranked Wichita State women's tennis team fell 4-3 to No. 37 TCU Friday afternoon in NCAA Tournament First Round action at the University of Miami's Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
WSU (27-4) took the doubles point but couldn't build on the momentum. All six singles matches finished up in straight-sets, with TCU winning the first three to completion for a 3-1 advantage.
The Shockers drew even at 3-3 with wins by
Giulia Guidetti and
Aleksandra Trifunovic on courts 4 and 5, putting all eyes on court 1. Down a set,
Gabriela Porubin roared back from a 5-3 deficit to force a tiebreaker, but TCU's Seda Arantekin won 7-3 to clinch the dual and send TCU (16-6) into Saturday's Second Round.
"We played such a good doubles point," WSU head coach,
Colin Foster said. "In singles there were certainly chances for us but credit TCU for playing better in those moments. We've had a record-setting season and today's result against a most-formidable opponent does nothing to diminish what this group accomplished."
Making its eighth-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, WSU lost a 4-3 First Round decision for the second-straight year and saw its school-record 17-match winning streak come to an end. The Shockers' 27 wins also tied a program-best.
Guidetti improved on her school record for singles wins, finishing up at 39-5 (25-1 in duals) with 18-straight wins. Pedrazzi ended her doubles match unfinished, leaving her with 32 wins – one short of the tying the program's single-season mark.
Doubles:
In the doubles portion, WSU raced to early leads on all three courts. Porubin and
Julia Schiller finished off TCU's nationally ranked duo of Arantekin and Caroline Wegner (ITA No. 34), 6-2, and gained some revenge from a loss in the finals of last summer's OU Fall Invite.
The remaining courts were tight. TCU's Mia King and Olaya Garrido-Reyes led 5-4 over WSU's
Rebecca Pedrazzi and Trifunovic, at No. 2 doubles, but the Shockers closed out the doubles point with Guidetti and
Abby Stevens' 6-4 triumph on court No. 3.
Singles:
TCU's No. 1 singles player Marie Norris was removed from the lineup prior to the singles portion, prompting a last-minute shakeup at all six positions, but the Horned Frogs still enjoyed a quick start. TCU took first sets on four of the six courts, with Guidetti (No. 4) and Trifunovic (No. 5) providing WSU's only positives.
The Frogs evened the dual at 1-1 when Wegner defeated Schiller, 6-3, 6-4 on court No. 3, and they took a 2-1 advantage less than 10 minutes later with Garrido-Rivas' win over Pedrazzi at the No. 2 spot, 6-4, 6-3.
Momentum swings followed. Down a set, Stevens got off to a strong start to her second set on court 6, but Alexis Pereira bounced back for a 6-3, 7-5 win to go up 3-1 overall.
WSU reeled off two quick wins in successions to even the dual at 3-3. Trifunovic closed out a two-set sweep on court 5, 6-4, 6-2. Guidetti put away her own sweep at No. 4 by a 6-2, 7-5 margin.
That placed all eyes on the lone remaining match at No. 1 singles. Down a set already, Porubin had faced a 5-3 deficit in the second before winning back-to-back games.
With the pivotal No. 1 singles match now tied at 5-all (and 30-30), TCU's Seda Arantekin served up a win to go up 6-5.
That left Porubin needing to hold serve to force tiebreaker. She did so, up 40-30, with a forehand winner.
However, Porubin's bid to send the match to a third set came up short. Arantekin took six of the first seven points and clinched the dual with a 7-3 win.
