NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State used five unearned runs to defeat Wichita State 6-4 in game one of a three-game series.
Gunnar Troutwine went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while
Greyson Jenista and
Dayton Dugas went 2-for-4 and
Josh DeBacker went 1-for-2 with three walks and a RBI.
Starter
Cody Tyler went 6.1 innings and gave up one earned run on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
The Shockers jumped on the board in the top of the first. With two outs,
Alec Bohm and
Greyson Jenista both singled and
Gunnar Troutwine's triple off the top of the left field wall drove in both runs for a 2-0 lead.
The Redbirds answered with four runs in the bottom of the second. With one out, Joe Kelch and Jean Ramirez both walked and a Shocker error loaded the bases. With two outs, Brian Rodemoyer walked to drive in a run and Daniel Dwyer doubled to left field to unload the bases and give the Redbirds a 4-2 lead.
ILS used an infield single and a Shocker error to add a run in the fourth for a 5-2 lead.
The Shockers cut into the lead in the seventh. Troutwine led off with a single and
Zach Reding reached on an error.
Dayton Dugas' single loaded the bases and
Josh DeBacker walked to score Troutwine.
Trey Vickers' sacrifice fly scored Reding to cut the lead to 5-4.
The Redbirds tacked on a run in the seventh after a double by Dwyer and a RBI single from Owen Miller.
The Shockers and Redbirds play game two of the series on Sat., May 14 at 2 p.m.
