Shockers Come Back to Beat ILS, 15-12

NORMAL, Ill. – Wichita State rallied from a nine-run deficit to defeat Illinois State 15-12 in game two of a three-game series.

Chase Rader's RBI single tied the game at 12 in the top of the ninth and Luke Ritter's three-run home run gave WSU the 15-12 win.

Rader went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Travis Young went 2-for-6 with four RBI and a grand slam.

Reliever Tyler Jones pitched one shutout inning for the win and John Hayes pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Joe Kelch's two-run home run gave the Redbirds a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Blake Molitor's two-run shot to left field increased the ISU lead to 4-0 in the second inning.

Greyson Jenista's sacrifice fly cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the third inning, but the Redbirds answered with a solo home run from Ryan Hutchinson in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-1.

The Redbirds added two more in the fourth and two in the fifth to increase the lead to 9-1.

After Luke Ritter reached on an error, Keenan Eaton walked and Ritter scored on a single by Zach Reding. Trey Vickers' RBI single scored Eaton to pull WSU within 9-3.

ISU scored three unearned runs in the sixth to go up 12-3, but the Shockers used four hits, two walks and a hit batsman to score seven runs in the seventh. The inning was highlighted by a grand slam from Travis Young that pulled WSU within 12-10.

Jenista and Chase Rader led off the eighth with singles and with two outs Keenan Eaton singled to drive in Jenista and cut the lead to 12-11.

With runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the ninth, Rader singled to right field to drive in DeBacker to tie the score at 12. Luke Ritter followed with a three-run home run to put the Shocks up 15-12.

The Shockers and Redbirds wrap up the series on Sun., May 15 at 1 p.m.
