WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State needed just over 90 minutes to finish off a 5-0 win over Southern Illinois, Sunday afternoon at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex, to claim its eighth-consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship.

WSU (27-3) tied a school record with its 27th dual victory, equaling the 2005-06 team's final mark. The Shockers' 17th-consecutive win also set a new program record.

"I thought we handled the emotions of the day well," WSU head coach, Colin Foster said. "It was unique, having the guys finishing their thriller as we were starting, and we just got right down to business and put the focus where it needed to be on our match. We've played such composed tennis all year and we're excited our season will continue at the NCAA championships."

The team will learn its postseason destination on Tuesday. NCAA women's action begins Friday, May 13 at 16 different regional sites around the country.

Fans are invited to the tournament selection show watch party, Tuesday afternoon in the Charles Koch Arena Champions Club (women at 4:00 p.m. and men at 4:30 p.m. CT).

The Shockers - No. 28 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Rankings - won their 10th MVC Tournament title in 11 years and 18th overall.

WSU set the tone early on a chilly, breezy afternoon, building leads of 5-0, 4-0 and 4-1 on doubles courts 1, 2 and 3. The team of Gabriela Porubin and Julia Schiller picked up a 6-2 victory at No. 1, and Giulia Guidetti and Abby Stevens won 6-1 at No. 3 to close out the doubles point.

WSU was equally efficient in singles play, where the Shockers swept all 10 completed sets (making them a perfect 24-for-24 on the weekend). Schiller picked up her third win of the tournament, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3. Guidetti raced to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph on court No. 4. Trifunovic (6-0, 6-2 at No. 5) and Pedrazzi (6-2, 6-0 at No. 2) finished within seconds of one another.

The Shockers' last defeat came Feb. 22. Their 17-consecutive wins bested the run of 16-straight by 1993 team.

WSU also extended on a handful of other streaks, earning its 79th-consecutive win over MVC foes (dating back to 2008), its 23rd-straight MVC Tournament match and its 35th-in-a-row at home. All are school records.
