Shocker Tennis Set to Host MVC Tournament

Tournament Central | 11129 Indoor Bracket (In Case of Rain) | 11129 Men's Bracket | 11129 Women's Bracket

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State plays host to the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Men's and Women's Team Championships, April 29-May 1.

Both Shocker teams have earned the top seed in their respective brackets. The women – who debut at 9:00 a.m. Friday with a quarterfinal match against Evansville – are seven-time defending champions. The Shocker men -- winners of 24 Valley tournament titles -- have a first-round bye and will open Saturday with a 10:00 a.m. semifinal match.

Venues
WSU's Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex will be the site for Friday's women's quarterfinals, Saturday's men's semifinals, and both the men's and women's championships on Sunday. Men's quarterfinal matches are slated for Friday at Crestview Country Club, and the women will hold semifinal matches there on Saturday.

Now in its 23rd season as home of the WSU men's and women's tennis programs, the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex has been a frequent MVC Tournament site. The 2016 event marks the fifth go-around for both the men's and women's tournaments since it opened its doors in September of 1993.

Inclement Weather
With the threat of rain in the forecast Friday during first round action, play could potentially be split up between three locations – Crestview Country Club, Genesis Health Club and the Wichita Country Club. For more details and match times view the "Indoor Bracket" above.

MEN'S TENNIS - PRE-TOURNAMENT NOTES

First Round Bye

After clinching the MVC regular season crown, Wichita State receives a first round bye as the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The Shockers will play the winner of Illinois State and UMBC Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.

Shockers In The MVC Tournament
  • WSU's 24 MVC Tournament Championships are more than any other two programs combined.
  • The Shockers' most recent title came in its last go-around as host. In 2013, WSU bested Drake, 4-3, in the finals to grab an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
  • Head Coach Brad Louderback has led the men's tennis program to two MVC Championships.
  • WSU has played in the championship match in each of the last six seasons.
  • Wichita State is the No. 1 seed for the first time since 1998.

MVC Regular Season Champs
Wichita State clinched the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title with a pair of Drake losses last Saturday afternoon, marking the program's third MVC regular season championship in school history. WSU previously won the MVC regular season title in 1997 and 1998. The Shockers finished MVC play 2-1 with wins over Illinois State and SIU. The lone loss came at Drake in the MVC opener.

Wichita State In The Rankings
Senior Tin Ostojic is the only Valley player currently in the Oracle/ITA Division I singles rankings. The WSU captain climbed six spots to No. 83 on this week's list. He has missed the last four matches to rest an ankle injury. Miroslav Herzan and Haru Inoue remain in the ITA Doubles rankings at No. 86, down seven spots from last week.

WOMEN'S TENNIS - PRE-TOURNAMENT NOTES

Shockers in a Nutshell
With a veteran lineup featuring four seniors the Wichita State women (24-3, 7-0 MVC) have been nothing short of spectacular, surging as high as No. 13 in early March in the Oracle/ITA Division I rankings. They enter the weekend at No. 28, marking the first time in history that a Shocker team has carried a top-30 national ranking into Valley Tournament play.

• After wrapping up their eighth-straight MVC regular season title last weekend, WSU will now look to extend a similar streak of tournament championships and book an eighth-consecutive NCAA Tournament bid.

• Winners of 14-straight dual matches, if the Shockers hoist the trophy on Sunday, they'll set a new school record for consecutive victories (previously 16 in 1993) and equal the single-season wins mark (27-3, 2005-06).

• At .722, head coach Colin Foster owns the highest winning percentage in WSU history. He's 135-52 in seven seasons.

Quality Wins
WSU was battle-tested during the non-conference portion of the schedule with 12 matches against nationally-ranked opponents, resulting in a 9-3 record.

Wins over Oklahoma (No. 35), Minnesota (61), Washington (33), Kansas (23), New Mexico (46), SMU (50), Tulsa (18), Kansas State (65) and Texas-Arlington (48) helped boost the Shockers' confidence.

Their only regular season losses came in true road matches at Texas A&M (No. 10), Oklahoma State (10) and Arkansas (42).

 Regular Season Champs
• The Shockers' eight-straight conference crowns is the longest women's regular season title streak in MVC history - in any sport – and they've done it in dominant fashion, winning 76-straight against conference foes.

• The 2015-16 team claimed 42 of a possible 43 dual points from its seven Valley opponents on its way to a 7-0 conference finish. In 56 MVC regular season matches from 2009-16, WSU has outscored the competition 357-29.

 WSU in the MVC Tournament
• WSU hosts the women's championship for the seventh time overall (and for the fifth time since the 1993 construction of the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex).

• The Shockers are seven-time defending champions. In the 20 seasons since the MVC began playing a regular season women's tennis schedule (1996-97 to present), WSU has won the title 11 times.

• This is the 30th tournament to feature dual match bracket play. Since the switch in 1987, the Shockers have played in all but nine championship matches. They've appeared in an MVC-record 10-straight, dating back to 2006.

Senior Moment
• A Senior Day victory improved WSU's overall, four-year mark to 82-25, making the Class of 2016 the winningest (by volume) in school history, ahead of the Class of 2009's 81-25 record.

Shocker Standouts
• MVC Player of the Year candidate Gabriela Porubin (25-9) climbed to No. 94 in this week's national rankings.

• Sophomore Giulia Guidetti (36-5) broke the school's single-season wins record, besting Shocker Sports Hall of Famer Sandy Sadler's 32-year old mark. Sadler - a member of the MVC's All-Centennial Team - went 34-11 in 1983-84. Guidetti has won 15-straight matches and 33-of-35.

Abby Stevens (30-11) is the first WSU player to reach 30 singles wins in multiple seasons. She was 31-6 as a junior. Stevens, who went 20-14 as a freshman at Colorado State before transferring back to her hometown, has a career 104-45 record, which is the MVC's highest active win total. Her 84 wins at WSU is tied for 10th on the Shockers' all-time list.

• A pair of wins last weekend moved Rebecca Pedrazzi (94-38 career doubles record) into a tie for fourth-place on WSU's all-time doubles wins list. Now 30-9, Pedrazzi becomes just the sixth player in school history to record 30 doubles wins in a year.

• Pedrazzi and doubles partner Aleksandra Trifunovic are 27-9 together with 13-straight wins. Only WSU's Hall of Fame combo of Sadler and Jill Braendle have won more matches in a season (33-6 in 1983-84; 30-7 in 1984-85; 28-12 in 1982-83).
