Guidetti's Record Win Keys Sweep of Aces

Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. – Sophomore Giulia Guidetti broke Wichita State's single season wins record, and the Shocker women cruised to a 4-0 win over Evansville, Saturday morning at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.

WSU (23-3, 6-0 MVC) moved one step closer to its eighth-straight MVC title heading into its Saturday, 1:00 p.m. regular season finale with Southern Illinois. Evansville finished out its schedule at 8-19 (0-7 MVC) and will be the No. 8 seed in next weekend's MVC Tournament.

Playing two spots higher in the lineup, due to some pre-match shuffling, Guidetti closed strong for a 6-3, 6-0 victory on court No. 2 to improve to 35-5 on the year.

The win vaulted Guidetti past Shocker Sports Hall of Famer, Sandy Sadler, who held the mark for over three decades after going 34-11 in 1983-84.

"I can't say enough good things about Giulia," WSU head coach Colin Foster said. "She has approached every match with a sense of urgency and given her best effort day in and day out."

Guidetti won her 14th-straight match, dating back to mid-February, but the momentum traces all the way back to October. After a rough first round loss, Guidetti reeled off five-straight wins to earn the consolation bracket title and has been tough to beat ever since, winning 32 of her last 34 singles matches.

"I felt like after going on the run she went on in Stillwater, winning six in a row to win the consolation, she began do fully realize that she can win with a combination of offense and defense," Foster said. "Her variety is almost unmatched in women's tennis and her attitude is tremendous. When she's playing well she is tough to beat, and even when she's not she simply finds ways to win."

In upping winning streak against MVC foes to 75-matchese, No. 26 WSU claimed the doubles point. The tandem of Aleksandra Trifunovic and Rebecca Pedrazzi played up a spot but breezed to a 6-1 win on court no. 1. Pedrazzi and Trifunovic improved to 26-9 with their 12th-straight win.

Abby Stevens and Guidetti teamed up for a 6-4 win on court No. 2 to clinch the doubles point.

In singles action, Tanaporn Thongsing wasted little time dispatching Doreen Crasta on court No. 5, winning 6-3, 6-0, and Abby Stevens rolled 6-0, 6-0 over Katie Delgado on Court No. 4. Guidetti's win at the No. 2 spot over Andjela Brguljan clinched the dual.

Julia Schiller (No. 1) and Trifunovic (No. 3) were each closing in on two-set wins when the match came to an end, while Summer Schlotterback trailed on Court No. 6.
