CHICAGO - The Wichita State women's golf team have won the Missouri Valley Conference Championship for the third consecutive season. The Shockers turned in their second-lowest score of the season (and in program history), shooting 287-289-298 over the three rounds for a total of 884. That total is also a new MVC Championship record. The previous best (899) was held by SIU in 2007, although Indiana State bested it as well this year, shooting an 897. The first and second-round scores also rank third and fourth in single-round team scores in program history. Wichita State was the only team at the Championship to shoot under 300 in each round.
Taryn Torgerson turned in the finest performance of her career so far, as she earned her first win as a Shocker. Torgerson shot 74-69-71 for a total of 214 to take first place by one stroke. The 214 is a new 54-hole best for her, and is the second-best score in MVC Championship history. Her second-round score of 69 is tied for third-best in Shocker history, and is also a new career-best. Torgerson was named All-Conference at the conclusion of the tournament.
Torgerson is the third golfer in program history to earn medalist honors at the Championship, joining
Alejandra Arellano, who won it last year, and Ann Vandermillen in 1987 (in what was then the Gateway Conference). Torgerson had the second-most birdies in the Championship, and tied for the best par-3 scoring.
Maria Alejandra Villalobos also turned in the best performance of her season, finishing in seventh place after scoring 75-74-75 for a total of 224. Villalobos picked up her first top-ten finish of the season, and her 54-hole score is also her best score on the year. Villalobos led all golfers in pars with 40 out of 54 holes.
Gavrilla Arya finished tied for ninth place after shooting 74-73-80 for a total of 227. Arya had a strong spring season with three top-ten finishes and a top-20 finish in five events played. The freshman from Jakarta, Indonesia was named to the All-Conference team, and also was named Newcomer of the Year.
Meghan Jack finished in 11th place, scoring 79-73-76 for a total of 228. Jack earned her sixth top-20 finish on the season, 15th in her career. Jack was also named an All-Conference selection for the second time in her career.
Bryce Schroeder finished tied for 12th place, carding 74-79-76 for a total of 229. Schroeder picked up her fifth top-20 finish on the year, 17th in her career. Schroeder also was named an All-Conference selection, the fourth Shocker to receive All-Conference honors this year. No other team received more than two selections (Missouri State).
Additionally, head coach
Tom McCurdy was named the Valley's Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. McCurdy also won Coach of the Year in 2002 when he was with Northern Arizona in the Big Sky Conference.
The Shockers have automatically qualified for the NCAA Regionals. Regionals will be played on May 5-7 at four locations: Stanford, Calif., Bryan, Texas, Baton Rouge, La., and Shoal Creek, Ala. The Golf Channel will hold a Selection Show on Monday, April 25.
