Shockers Sweep Bears on Day One

WICHITA, Kan. - With 19 hits in two games, the Wichita State softball team swept Northern Colorado on day one of the series, run-ruling the Bears in both games, 10-1 and 8-0.

In game one, Katie Malone got the start for the Shockers, throwing her fifth complete game of the season and only allowing five hits in her five innings of work. Malone also struck out four batters on the day.

Offensively, Wichita State had eight players collect at least one hit and had Mackenzie Wright and Liz Broyles collect two.

Wright got things started in the bottom half of the first inning with a single. After two more hits and a walk, Cacy Williams came to the plate and crushed a three run homerun over the leftfield wall to give the Shockers a 5-0 lead after the first inning.

In the top of the third inning, the Bears were able to scratch across their only run of the day to make the score, 5-1.

The Shockers responded in the bottom half of the third, scoring two runs to push the lead back to 7-1.

Again in the fourth inning, the Shockers added three more runs, making the score 10-1 heading into the top of the fifth.

In the fifth inning, Malone faced five batters and struck out two to give Wichita State the 10-1 victory.

In game two, Jenni Brooks got the start in the circle and threw 4.1 innings, giving up just five hits and zero runs. Kelsey Sterneker entered the game in the fourth inning with one out and pitched 1.2 innings allowing zero hits.

Macklin Hitz led the way for the Shockers, going 3-for-3 with a walk and drove in two runs.

Again in the second game, Wichita State struck first, scoring one run in the second inning on a single from Ashley Johnson.

After two scoreless innings, The Shockers woke up the bats, scoring five runs after six straight hits in the inning making the score, 6-0

In the bottom of the sixth, Wichita State added two more runs to end the game and give the Shockers their second victory of the day, 8-0.

Wichita State is now 11-9 overall and will be in action again tomorrow for the final game of this three game series against Northern Colorado at 11 a.m.
