Shockers Close Out No. 34 Washington, 4-2

STILLWATER, Okla. – The 31st-ranked Wichita State women's tennis team defeated No. 33 Washington, 4-2, Sunday morning in a neutral court dual at Oklahoma State's Michael & Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.

WSU (10-2) won its sixth-straight match. Washington, which defeated No. 15 Baylor earlier this month in Waco, dropped to 9-3.

The Shockers improved to 3-2 against nationally-ranked teams. They also own wins over No. 35 Oklahoma and No. 61 Minnesota.

"Starting from the doubles it was a very back and forth match," WSU head coach, Colin Foster said. "One player or team would get a lead and the other would push back. The windy conditions also made it a mentally taxing match in addition to the physical points they were having."

WSU earned doubles wins on courts 2 and 3 to take the first point of the dual, and Aleksandra Trifunovic quickly upped the lead to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.

Washington captured points at No. 1 and No. 3 singles to draw even, and the three remaining matches all moved to a third set.

Giulia Guidetti swung momentum back to WSU, winning a back-and-forth 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 match at No. 4.

Abby Stevens was on the brink of defeat but battled back from a one-set deficit by taking the second set in a tiebreaker and the third by a 6-4 count to deliver the clincher at No. 6 singles.

"Aleks was fantastic, and to stretch that lead to 2-0 so quickly really puts pressure on the other side," Foster said. "Becky, Giulia, and Abby competed so hard and found a way to win. We are certainly a better team after being tested so thoroughly in so many ways. We have another busy week ahead of us and we are looking forward to playing the Hogs in Fayetteville tomorrow."

WSU continues a difficult two-game swing Monday in Fayetteville against No. 42 Arkansas (5-4). First serve is set for 1 p.m. CT.
