Photo GalleryWICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State used a nine-run third inning to defeat Northern Colorado 17–2 for the second win of the three game series.
Keenan Eaton was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.
Ryan Tinkham also went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Starter
Willie Schwanke pitched four innings to earn the win with five strikeouts and two runs on seven hits.
UNC's starting pitcher Spencer Applebach lasted only 2.2 innings, and the visiting team used three more pitchers from their bullpen.
The Bears scored in the top of the first when Cole Maltese hit a ground rule double, bringing in Tyler Yamaguchi who doubled and then moved to third on a wild pitch.
The Shockers responded with a three-run second inning.
Travis Young reached first on a bunt and advanced to second when Vickers singled to centerfield. Mucha drove in Young on a fielder's choice single to put the Shockers on the board. Mucha stole second and Tinkham followed with a base hit that brought in two runs to give the Shockers a 3-1 lead.
With one out in the third, back-to-back doubles by Eaton and
Tanner Kirk started the nine run inning. Eaton scored and Kirk advanced to third on a fielding error and Kirk scored on a sacrifice fly by Young. Vickers and Rader reached on singles, and four walks in a row to Mucha, Tinkham, Troutwine and Reding advanced the runners to make the score 8-1. A wild pitch to Eaton brought in Tinkham, and another double by Eaton scored two additional runs. Young singled and advanced to second on the throw to drive in the final run of the inning, putting the Shockers up 12-1.
A walk by Troutwine led off the fifth inning and Reding advanced him to third on a double down the right-field line.
Alec Bohm and
Luke Ritter both grounded out, but allowed Troutwine and Reding to score to increase WSU's lead 14-2.
Josh DeBacker started the sixth inning with a double and scored on a single by
Taylor Sanagorski. Bohm hit a single up the middle that drove in another run for a 16-2 lead.
Jordan Boyer singled and advanced to third on two wild pitches, then scored on DeBacker's groundout for the final 17-2 score.
The Shockers are next in action on Sun., Feb. 21 against Northern Colorado at 1 p.m.
