Quotables: Gregg Marshall

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall talked about the new home-and-home series agreement with Oklahoma, the team's improved perimeter shooting, and Conner Frankamp's evolving role on offense, during his weekly press conference. Read on for the higlights...

MARSHALL ON...

...his team's improved three-point shooting:
"I think we are as good as shooting team as we've had. The personnel we were putting out there, the level of competition with injuries early on, obviously we weren't very good shooting the ball, among other problems we had. We're getting healthy, [and playing] different personnel out there. We haven't changed anything that we're doing, it's just who's actually running the show, making the passes, and taking the shots.

We're just trying to get easy baskets in transition and not be as structured. Get [a shot] up as quick as you can and just play basketball...We have depth and we can use it. [Players] can run, and when [they] get tired, we can take [them] out."

...The news of the new series announced with Oklahoma:
"It's something we've been working on. Coach Devon Smith started conversations with someone on their staff. We've been talking about it now as a 'hot stove' topic for several months...we're excited. I've known [Oklahoma] coach [Lon] Kruger a while, he's a fantastic coach and a great gentleman. We're just excited to play a game that close [at Chesapeake Energy Solutions Arena] against a really fine institution and program."

...The difficulty of scheduling non-conference opponents now as compared to in past years:
"I'd say it's a 6 or 7 [out of 10]. It's still difficult, but every year we seem to have another program such as Oklahoma step up and say 'we'd like to play you.' Alabama, Tennessee, Utah, UNLV, although they didn't choose to since it was part of the Mountain West series; Seton Hall was a good series for us. So those are happening, and I don't know exactly why that is, but you'd have to surmise [recent successes] as to what's causing that to be the case.

...Conner Frankamp's performance on Saturday vs. SIU, and if he received the message asking for "more":
"He's very receptive to coaching, and I enjoy coaching him. I challenge him. I remember when I was saying that, Fred [VanVleet] came over to me and said 'keep doing that coach, he needs to hear that.' Everyone knows what he's capable of, when they all see it in practice. For whatever reason he was just more tentative in games. At some point he's got to shed that and just go play, and it was a good sign against Southern Illinois.

[I'm happy] as long as he takes good shots, he doesn't need to take crazy shots. He and Ron both took 'heat checks' in the game. They took 28 footers, but neither one made them. Ron was very hot at the time, and Conner was feeling it as well. They were open, but they need to be within reason."

...How Frankamp can continue to give "more" without taking away from VanVleet and Baker:
"For him, it wasn't just shooting that I was talking about. I want more of everything. I want him to be more aggressive in using a ball screen...when he closes out, deflections in the passing lane, guarding a guy that doesn't have the ball. I want him running harder in transition to look for his spot-up jumper. Those are just several of the thoughts I had when applying 'more' to him."

...The idea of having Anton Grady and Shaquille Morris playing at the same time:
"It's an option."
