Eddie Stoica registered a pair of wins and all three doubles teams won on Friday during the first day of play at the Midland Fall Invitational to lead the Wichita State men's tennis team. Play is slated to resume Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CST.
Stoica needed three sets vs. SMU's Markus Knutzon before coming away with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, victory in his first collegiate match. The Auckland, New Zealand, native then defeated UT Arlington's Mario Muniesa in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to Saturday's flight two semifinal match vs. Texas A&M's James Martell.
The doubles team of
Miroslav Herzan and
Haru Inoue advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Texas' Johnny Goodwin and Harrison Scott, 6-3, and Tulsa's Matthew Kirby and Dylan McCloskey, 6-3. The Shocker duo take the court on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Sergio de Vilchez and
Vitor Mendes combined to take down San Diego's Alex Araouzos and Pratt Keerassuntonton, 6-4, and were in the middle of their second round match before weather halted play for the rest of the evening. They will finish their match Saturday morning.
Jocelyn Devilliers and
Eddie Stoica advanced to the second round of doubles after defeating Texas Tech's Carlos DiLaura and Evan Nix, 6-4.
The day also marked the first match in a Shocker uniform for Inoue. After dropping the first set to Tulsa's Dylan McCloskey, 1-6, Inoue bounced back to take sets two and three, 7-5, 6-1. In the round of 16, Inoue dropped a three-set match with New Mexico's Hayden Sabatka, 6-7, 6-4, 6-1.
Devilliers also collected a first round win in singles by taking down New Mexico's Bart Van Leijsen in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6. In Devilliers' next match he fell in a hard fought battle vs. San Diego's Romain Kalaydjian, 7-6, 7-5.
Mendes went 1-1 on Friday with a win over Abilene Christian's Henry Adams, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, while falling to San Diego's Alex Araouzos, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.
Herzan dropped his first round match against UT Arlington's Jhonathan Gonzalez, 6-3, 6-3. Herzan will play SMU's Julio Olaya in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m.
Sergio de Vilchez fell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to the top seed in the tournament, TCU's Trevor Johnson.
UP NEXTFollowing the Midland Fall Invitational, the Shockers will head to Tulsa, Okla., for the ITA All-American Championships, Oct. 3-12.
